At that moment, Robert was so worked up he looked like he was about to choke on it.
He had gone through a lot to dig up the news that this piece of land would be taken over later.
When that happened, the price would shoot so high nobody could even put a number on it.
If he just let it go like that, wouldn't he be handing that fortune straight to Nathaniel?
No. That wasn't happening.
"Elena, Nathaniel, how about this? I really do want to show some filial respect for our ancestors. I can add some money on top of the original price for this land. What do you say?"
Nathaniel lifted his eyes to him.
"How could I do that? You're my uncle. How could I make money off you?"
"What are you saying? Business is business. The accounts should be clear." Robert pushed the words out fast. "How about this? I'll add Ten million."
Nathaniel just looked at him and said nothing.
The corner of Robert's mouth twitched.
He changed his tune on the spot. "I was joking just now. Fifty million, then."
All Nathaniel had done was make a few calls and move his lips.
His fingers tapped lightly against the tabletop.
Robert's thoughts were all over the place.
He wanted to raise the price again, but he couldn't bear to do it.
"One hundred million!"
Nathaniel saw the moment had come.
He looked at Robert and said, "Uncle, I didn't expect you to care this much about honoring our ancestors. All right, then. I'll let you have this land."
The tension Robert had been holding onto finally dropped.
Good thing Nathaniel had agreed.
What was another one hundred million?
What he stood to make from this was far more than that.
"Since it's settled, let's eat," Wren said, completely missing the current running underneath the exchange as he called everyone to the table.
But Robert had no mind for food.
He smiled at Nathaniel and said, "I've already eaten, Nathaniel. Why don't you come sign the agreement with me first?"
He was afraid the longer this dragged on, the more likely something would change and bring regret.
