Wren caught the different looks on their faces and let out a sigh.
"You people really don't understand my older brother. Deep down, he's still a good man."
Elena very nearly told him the truth.
He was the one who didn't understand his older brother.
Everyone there could see what kind of man Robert was.
Even Elliot and Jon could tell he wasn't any good.
Elliot looked at Wren and said, trying to be helpful, "Grandpa, you really shouldn't trust people so easily."
"Elliot, don't bother trying to talk your grandpa out of it. Once he makes up his mind, not even ten bulls could drag him back."
Elliot gave an "oh," then shook his head.
With an old-fashioned seriousness that didn't fit his age at all, he said, "What a shame. I thought all adults were supposed to be smarter."
Wren went quiet for a beat before he said, "...Elliot, it's very rude to talk about Grandpa like that."
Elliot lifted his head and looked at him again.
"Got it, Grandpa. You're very smart."
The whole family nearly burst out laughing again.
Wren's face turned bright red.
He didn't say another word.
Seeing him like that, everyone lowered their heads and went back to eating.
After dinner, Cecilia and the others stayed the night there. Back in their bedroom, she looked at Nathaniel and asked, "Did you do something to that land?"
Nathaniel took two bottles of water from the fridge and handed one to Cecilia.
He opened the other for himself, took a drink, and only then said, "Very smart."
"Are you complimenting me, or making fun of me?"
Cecilia was on Nathaniel's side, so she had naturally seen through the whole thing.
Nathaniel was just about to answer when a knock came from the door.
"Come in."
Only then did someone push the door open from outside. It was Elena standing in the doorway.
"Nathaniel, what exactly is going on here?" Elena asked as she walked in, too impatient to wait.

On the other side, the second Robert got the land, he went straight back and ordered people to add a building on it.
It had to be finished within this month.

A piece of land by itself naturally wasn't worth as much as land with a building already standing on it.
If Robert wanted to make more money, he had to get the house built within that window.
Miranda knew her father-in-law wasn't the type to act blindly, so she didn't ask any more questions.
But Robert stopped her.
"Miranda, you're both daughters-in-law of the Rainsworth family. You need to work harder."
What he said was obviously aimed at Cecilia.
Miranda's face stiffened.
She didn't dare show any disrespect to her father-in-law, so all she could do was nod awkwardly. "Yes."
