When Her Death Couldn't Break Him (Cecilia and Nathaniel) novel Chapter 2255

"You only found out a few days ago, and the building went up this fast?" Wren wasn't stupid.

The only reason he had trusted Robert again and again was because Robert was his own brother.

Robert heard that and still refused to budge. "Wren, I'm your brother. You really think I'd lie to you?"

That hit Wren head-on, and for a second, he didn't know what to say.

Even Cecilia, standing off to the side, couldn't keep watching in silence.

Robert had gone too far.

She was just about to speak when Nathaniel stopped her and signaled with his eyes for her to wait.

When Robert saw that the three of them had gone quiet, he knew perfectly well this thing he'd done was low.

He still didn't want to offend the younger brother who had helped him make money.

"Wren, if I'm making money, shouldn't that make you happy? We're family."

Wren had no idea what else he could even say. He turned his head and looked at Robert. "Brother, what you did really cut deep."

That was when Nathaniel finally spoke.

"Uncle Robert, since we're family, now that you've made money, shouldn't you give us half?"

Robert let out a broad laugh. "Nathaniel, you've got to be kidding me. Back then, I paid extra to buy this land from you. Now the land suddenly turned profitable, and you want me to split it with you? Let me ask you this—if I'd lost money, would you have made up the difference for me?"

That was exactly the answer Nathaniel had been waiting for.

Picking up right where Robert left it, Nathaniel asked, "So what you're saying is, if it had lost money, I wouldn't have needed to cover your losses?"

"Of course not. Business is business. We're relatives, sure, but we still have to be reasonable, don't we?"

Nathaniel nodded slowly. "You're right."

Then he turned to Wren. "Dad, let's just leave it at that. Don't let this keep bothering you."

Wren stood there like he had swallowed something bitter and couldn't spit it out.

The corners of Robert's mouth lifted high, and the satisfaction in his eyes wouldn't stay hidden no matter how hard he tried.
