Lucille still had no idea that after she handed the work to Nathaniel, Nathaniel had turned right around and handed it off to her own husband.
"Lucy, I'm sorry. I have to work late today, so I can't come pick you up. Head home by yourself and wait for me at home, okay?"
Over the phone, Mason said it in a low, careful voice.
Lucille's brows pulled together. "Why are you working late again? You've been working late every day lately. Is the company really that busy?"
"Yeah. There've been a lot more things going on at the company lately, and sir keeps running over to your side every day, so my workload's gotten even heavier."
There was nothing Mason could do about it.
Lucille went still for a beat, like something had dropped straight through her.
"Then what am I supposed to do? I wanted some alone time with you."
"Just hang in there. Once this stretch is over, it'll be fine."
Lucille ended the call anyway, not the least bit willing.
Cecilia looked at her. "What is it? Mason can't come pick you up again?"
Lucille nodded. "I don't know what's been going on with him lately. He's working late every single day, and every time he gets back, it's especially late."
"Alright." Cecilia asked, "Want to ride back with us?"
Lucille shook her head right away. "No thanks. I'm not about to be the third wheel."
Nathaniel stuck to Cecilia every day.
More than once, Lucille had caught on that he even got jealous of her.
At this point, Lucille was starting to suspect her husband's daily overtime had Nathaniel's fingerprints all over it.
Since Lucille put it that way, Cecilia didn't press her anymore.
Just then, Nathaniel walked in too.
"Ceci, time to get off work and go home."
Then he spotted Lucille in the office and asked on purpose, "Miss Campbell, Mason didn't come pick you up? It's this late, and he's letting you go back by yourself?"
Lucille's reply came out sharp. "He has to work overtime."
Honestly, Lucille was speechless.
Nathaniel was clearly doing it on purpose. He already knew Mason was working late, and he still had to ask like that. If that wasn't meant to get under her skin, what was?
Nathaniel acted like he didn't notice a thing and kept going on purpose. "Really? It doesn't seem like the company's busy right now. So why has Mason been working overtime every day?"

"You're right. I'll be more careful from now on. I won't do that again."
"Good. And be nicer to Mason from now on. He's been with you for a long time, after all."
"Okay, okay, okay."
At that point, whatever Cecilia said, Nathaniel listened.
Cecilia didn't say anything else.
She leaned back against the seat and fell asleep.
By the time they finally got home and the car came to a stop, Cecilia slowly opened her eyes.
"We're here?"
"Yeah." Nathaniel nodded. "Come on, get out."
Cecilia rubbed her eyes and let Nathaniel lead her out of the car.
She had gotten used to the way Nathaniel took care of her now.
They hadn't even made it to the front door when a familiar voice reached them.
