Of course Robert wasn't about to admit it. "What are you talking about? What money? Why don't I know anything about this?"
Wren looked confused too. He turned and looked at Nathaniel and Ceci.
"Nathaniel, what are you talking about?"
Nathaniel's brows lifted a little before he said, "It's nothing much. Yesterday, Miranda came to talk to Ceci in private about the ancestral graveyard land. She wanted us to return the money to you."
"What? That happened?" Robert put on a look of surprise. "How come I don't know anything about it? There has to be some misunderstanding."
"Yeah, I figured it was a misunderstanding too, so I didn't agree to it," Nathaniel said, following Robert's words right along. "Besides, Robert, you taught us yourself that even between brothers, accounts should be kept clear. Since we've already signed the contract, there's no way we'd return it. Otherwise, what kind of deal would that even be?"
Nathaniel spoke at an easy, unhurried pace.
His tone couldn't have sounded calmer, but somehow it only made it harder to sit through.
What could Robert even say to that?
Those were his own words in the first place.
"You're right. That foolish girl Miranda only went to you because I'm in the hospital and she was worried about my condition. When I get back, I'll make sure to straighten her out."
"If that's all it was, then there's no need for that. We're family. We don't have to talk like outsiders. Miranda was thinking about your health too, so we won't blame her," Nathaniel said.
At that moment, Robert truly wanted all of them out of his sight.
But he didn't dare. After all, he would surely need to ask favors of others in the future.
"Right, right, you're right..."
Robert said it anyway.
Nathaniel and the others stayed a little longer and exchanged a few more words with Robert before they finally left.
Once they were outside, Wren let out a long, heavy sigh.
"Nathaniel, you and your wife were saying all that for him to hear just now, weren't you?"
Wren had seen right through it. He just hadn't spoken up to stop it.
