As soon as Nathaniel and the others left, Robert immediately called Miranda.

"What the hell were you doing?"

The moment he opened his mouth, it was a demand.

Miranda sounded confused. "Dad, what happened?"

"You still have the nerve to ask me what happened? What exactly did you say to Cecilia? Did you tell them I was the one who told you to ask them to give the money back?"

Robert was burning under it, and his face couldn't hold up under the shame.

He was an elder, yet he'd had a junior go ask other juniors for money.

If Nathaniel and the others spread that around, he could forget about keeping his footing in this business.

The others would laugh him into the ground.

Miranda listened to Robert's furious tirade crashing down on her and drew her brows together.

Miranda held it in and kept her voice low. "Dad, you must've misunderstood me. Why would I do something that stupid?"

She went on right away. "I did everything the way you told me to. First I blamed them, and only after that did I ask them to give the money back. How was I supposed to know Cecilia had such a sharp tongue? Not only did she refuse, she even turned around and lectured me."

After hearing her out, Robert knew he'd blamed her for the wrong thing.

Still, he was the elder here. There was no way he was going to apologize to someone younger.

"Fine. Let it go. But next time, use your head a little. Don't go shoving every bit of responsibility onto somebody else."

"Okay. I know," Miranda said, agreeing out loud.

"And one more thing. While I'm in the hospital, I'll leave the company to you for now. If anything comes up, ask me anytime," Robert said, laying it out for her.

The truth was, he didn't trust a woman all that much. But he didn't have a choice. His son was useless, and the only one he could put to work was Miranda, his daughter-in-law.

The second she heard that arrangement, the delight in Miranda's eyes wouldn't stay hidden.

"Okay, Dad. Thank you for trusting me. I definitely won't let you down."

Robert nodded, then closed his eyes.

"Alright. You can go now. I'm tired too."

Only then did Miranda leave.

Once she was gone, Robert opened his eyes again and let out a long sigh.
