Silence settled over the car, and even the driver wasn't used to it.
Then, right at that moment, Nathaniel's phone rang.
He picked up his phone, glanced at the screen, and his brow tightened.
"What is it?" he said, deliberately lowering his voice so Cecilia beside him couldn't hear.
The man on the line said, "Sir, Nicholas wants to speak to you."
Nathaniel glanced at Cecilia.
Her eyes were closed. She looked like she'd fallen asleep.
"Okay. Put him through."
"Yes, sir."
It didn't take long before the voice on the other end changed.
Nicholas came on, his voice weak, followed by a couple hard coughs. "Cough, cough... Nathaniel, how long are you planning to keep me here?"
Nathaniel let out a quiet laugh.
"You've only lasted one year, and you already can't take it anymore?"
Nicholas said nothing.
Nathaniel went on.
"Since I sent you there, I never planned on letting you come back."
That one sentence landed like a death sentence on Nicholas.
Nicholas's eyes turned red on the spot.
"Are you kidding me? Cough, cough, cough..." He fought through another fit before forcing the words out. "I'm telling you, I can't hold on much longer."
"Then die out there."
There was no chance Nathaniel would forgive what he'd done.
After saying that, he hung up.
On the other side, Nicholas bent over in a violent coughing fit.
The guard looked at him coldly.
"Our sir is a pretty decent man. What exactly did you do to offend him?"
Nicholas didn't answer. He just turned and walked back toward his room, one step at a time.
That whole year had been pure torment.
Every day, he was locked inside a tiny house, barely seeing any light at all.
He really hadn't expected Nathaniel to be this ruthless for real.
Now regret came late.
He regretted not just living the good life he already had.
He closed his eyes, and Jocelyn surfaced in his mind again.

"Fine. I'll help you look into it."
For people like them, checking on one person should've been easy.
But Nicholas was in a special situation now. If he wanted any information, it took a lot of effort and a lot of money.
It didn't take the man long to get the results.
He came back and handed Nicholas a thick stack of papers.
"Take a look. It's all in there."
Nicholas opened it right away.
The second he flipped to the first page, the photograph on it hit his eyes like something sharp.
It was a photograph of Jocelyn and Yannick together.
And between them, there was a child.
Underneath, it said their child had been born last month and had just turned one month old this month.
Nicholas kept staring at that photograph, unmoving for a long time.
"You like this woman?" the guard asked.
Nicholas came back to himself and looked up at him.
"What kind of joke is that? She was just my subordinate before."
