When Her Death Couldn't Break Him (Cecilia and Nathaniel) novel Chapter 2302

"Oh? Then she got pretty lucky," the guard said as he took out an apple and bit into it. "Married herself a rich catch."

Nicholas said nothing.

He kept flipping through the pages.

Most of what was written there was about how loving Jocelyn and Yannick were with each other.

Nicholas's throat worked once.

He pointed at Jocelyn and said, one word at a time, "The person she used to like was me."

The guard was still chewing his apple, and Nicholas's words nearly made him choke on it.

"Cough, cough—then why'd she marry somebody else?"

That hit Nicholas right in the chest.

He couldn't answer at all.

A woman who had once had eyes only for him had somehow gone and married another man.

"I don't know. She had to be the one with bad judgment."

The guard smacked his lips. "Not necessarily. Yannick's the heir to the Hayes family, and you, right now..."

He shook his head as he walked out.

Nicholas was left alone in the room.

His coughing only got worse.

He finally managed to stop coughing.

Then he leaned against the wall by himself, looking more isolated than ever.

Tudela.

Cecilia slowly opened her eyes and looked at Nathaniel.

"Who were you talking to on the phone just now?"

Nathaniel held back for a long moment before he answered. "Nicholas."

The second she heard that name, Cecilia looked over at him in surprise.

"What did you two talk about?"

She hadn't heard anything about Nicholas in a long time.

The last time had been because of Elena.

Back then, Elena had sighed and said Nicholas had gone abroad and hardly kept in touch with the house anymore.

"Nothing much."

Nathaniel didn't want to bring him up too much in front of Cecilia.

He didn't want her dragged back to those bad memories.

But to Cecilia, it looked like he still hadn't let go of the fact that she had once liked Nicholas.
