When She Ended It With Divorce (Chiara and Titus) novel Chapter 78

**TITLE: Silent Roads Remember by Sawyer**

**Chapter 78**

The detective stood before Eunice, his face pale as if he had just encountered a specter. The embarrassment radiated from him, so intense that he couldn’t even muster the courage to meet her gaze.

Moments ago, he had been boasting, exuding confidence, but now he found himself utterly cornered, his bravado stripped away.

Paul, observing the detective’s sudden silence, exchanged a knowing glance with one of the security guards. The guard, understanding the unspoken command, stepped forward, his grip tightening on the detective’s arm, eliciting a sharp wince.

The detective’s demeanor shifted dramatically. A cry of pain escaped his lips, echoing around the room, “Oh, that hurts! Let go! Please, just let go!”

Eunice felt an unsettling tightness in her chest, yet she maintained her focus on the detective. *Please, don’t back down now,* she urged silently, even as his anguished cries sent chilling tremors through her.

“Hand over the negatives,” Paul demanded, his voice steady and commanding.

The detective, drenched in sweat and clearly at the end of his rope, stammered under pressure. “It’s… it’s in my bag,” he managed to say, his voice trembling.

Paul swiftly reached for the detective’s bag, extracting the camera with practiced ease. He scrutinized it for a moment, then declared, “Mr. Goodman, it’s all here.”

Titus, standing nearby, nodded in acknowledgment before turning his frigid gaze toward Eunice. His eyes were like ice, devoid of warmth or forgiveness.

Under his penetrating stare, Eunice felt her resolve waver. All her bravado evaporated, leaving her exposed and vulnerable. *I can’t even pretend to be strong right now. It’s no wonder I feel so guilty after pulling a stunt like this,* she thought, anxiety gnawing at her.

“W-what do you want?” she stuttered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Titus narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing her. “Did you see the photos?” he asked, his tone sharp and accusing.

Caught off guard, Eunice’s mind raced. She hadn’t anticipated such a direct question. The truth was, she hadn’t had the chance to look at the pictures before the chaos erupted.

But there was no way she was going to confess that. In a moment of defiance, her gaze flickered away, then snapped back. “Of course!” she retorted, her voice sharper than intended.

Titus held her in his icy gaze, unwavering, seeing through the thin veil of her lie.

“Ms. Murphy, you sent a private investigator to spy on me. So, enlighten me. How do you intend to rectify this situation?” he asked, his voice laced with menace.

Eunice’s breath hitched, a surge of defiance rising within her as she glared back, her jaw clenched. “What do you want? So what if I looked into you? You’re the one with a shattered personal life. If I managed to catch you in a lie, that’s on you, not me. If you hadn’t handed me the opportunity, do you really think I could’ve gathered any evidence?”

With every word, her fury intensified. Eunice shot Titus a venomous glare, her words spilling out through gritted teeth.

“When Chiara married you, I was genuinely happy for her because she…” Eunice began, but she quickly bit back the rest, resolute in her desire to protect Chiara’s dignity.

“I thought she’d find happiness with you. That’s why I chose to go abroad. If I had known you’d treat her so wretchedly, there’s no way I would’ve left her to endure that alone!” Eunice snapped, her voice rising with passion.

Now that the truth hung in the air, Eunice felt a newfound courage swell within her. She lifted her chin defiantly, refusing to back down as she met Titus’s gaze head-on.

“Titus, you’ve already moved on. Why can’t you just let Chiara go?” Eunice challenged, her voice laced with frustration and anger. Titus’s brow furrowed, his lips pressing into a thin line as he let out a derisive snort.

“I treat her badly?” he retorted coolly.

Eunice’s anger flared once more. “Do you? If you truly cared about her, why doesn’t she smile anymore? She used to light up the room with her laughter!”

Titus fell silent, her words striking a chord deep within him.

This was the second time someone had pointed this out to him. *What was Chiara really like back then?* he pondered. *Was she always so vibrant and full of life?*

His mind drifted back to the early days of their relationship. She had been so cheerful, her face beaming with joy every time she saw him.

Yet, as time passed, it felt as if her smile had faded, disappearing whenever he was near. Most of the time, she was silent in his presence, her words few and far between, her laughter a distant memory.

As these thoughts consumed him, Titus felt a sudden, unexpected ache in his chest.

Before this moment, he had always believed he treated Chiara well. He never sought to control her freedom, nor did he impose restrictions on her finances.

He was aware that many couples entered into prenuptial agreements that were far more constricting. Those glamorous wives of high society might appear to have it all, yet they often needed permission to spend even a single dollar.

However, he had never placed those kinds of limitations on Chiara.

He had never restricted her spending, even when it came to the Lynch Group. If she desired something, all she had to do was ask, and he would make it happen.

*So… was I really not good to her?* Titus thought, his mind racing.

He had witnessed countless fake marriages and hidden secrets in this world, always believing he was among the good ones.
