**TITLE: Silent Roads Remember by Sawyer**
**Chapter 84**
Vera was a woman of remarkable sensitivity and intelligence, adept at picking up on subtleties that others might overlook. In the private room, she sat quietly, her keen eyes scanning the faces around her, careful not to reveal the thoughts swirling in her mind.
Among those faces, one stood out to her—Chiara. There was something undeniably captivating about Chiara that piqued Vera’s curiosity.
With a warm, inviting smile, Vera turned toward Chiara and said, “I can’t quite shake the feeling that we’ve crossed paths before, Ms. Lynch.”
Chiara met her gaze, a confident smile gracing her lips, completely unbothered by the attention.
“Perhaps I just have one of those faces that blend into the background,” Chiara replied lightly, her tone playful.
Vera’s smile deepened, genuine admiration shining through. “Ms. Lynch, you are far too modest. If your face is what you consider ‘ordinary,’ then the rest of us might as well hide away.”
Paul, seated nearby, kept his eyes lowered, choosing to remain an observer in this exchange, while Lena, unable to contain her emotions, clenched her fists tightly in her lap.
Chiara offered a slight nod, acknowledging Vera’s compliment. “You’re too kind, Miss Combs.”
Vera felt a growing intrigue toward Chiara; at that moment, she was convinced that Chiara was anything but an ordinary secretary.
“Are you, by any chance, related to the Lynch family from Halinston, Ms. Lynch?” Vera inquired, her curiosity evident.
Chiara nodded, her expression open and honest. “Yes, Heather is my older sister.”
“Oh, that makes perfect sense,” Vera replied, her gaze shifting between Titus and Chiara as she took a sip of her coffee.
Even someone blind to the nuances of social hierarchies could see that the Lynch heiress working as a secretary at Goodman Group hinted at a deeper connection between her and Titus.
Titus, however, appeared disinterested in the women’s conversation. Instead, he raised his glass in a toast to Julius.
“Mr. Combs, this one’s for you,” Titus declared, his voice steady and confident.
Julius found himself warming to Titus more with each passing moment. “Mr. Goodman, my daughter Vera will be staying in Halinston for a while. Would you mind keeping her company? She just returned to the country and doesn’t have many friends here.”
At those words, Paul couldn’t help but glance at Julius, realizing the implications of his statement.
It was as if Julius was laying out his plans right before Titus’s eyes.
Lena’s expression hardened as she held her breath, stealing a glance at Titus, eager to see his reaction.
But before she could gauge his response, her eyes fell on Chiara, who remained calm and composed, an aura of tranquility surrounding her. This only intensified Lena’s tension.
‘How can she appear so utterly unfazed?’ Lena thought, frustration bubbling within her.
Chiara might be the Lynch heiress, but the Combs family was a towering financial dynasty, far surpassing her own.
Yet, in that moment, Chiara couldn’t bring herself to care. If Titus truly thought of her in that light, she would actually be grateful for the attention.
If she could perceive the subtle dynamics at play, there was no doubt the others in the room were equally aware.
Titus cast a fleeting glance at Chiara, but she was too engrossed in her own thoughts to notice.
However, everyone else caught the glance, including Julius, whose interest seemed to heighten.
Lena felt resentment bubbling within her, but simultaneously, she dreaded the idea of another formidable competitor entering the fray.
Julius scrutinized Chiara, noting her striking beauty. She might even eclipse his own daughter, Vera, in terms of allure.
For men like him, especially those who had achieved considerable success, beauty was merely the icing on the cake. What truly mattered was a family legacy that matched their own.
Jeffrey, ever perceptive, smirked as he set down his glass. “Mr. Combs, what about Wilbert and me? Or are we just not up to your standards?”
Wilbert chimed in with a grin, “Mr. Combs, Titus is always busy, but I’ve got some free time lately. Why not let me take care of Miss Combs? I assure you, she’ll feel right at home with me.”
Julius erupted into laughter. “Alright, alright, from this moment on, you young folks are all friends. Let’s raise our glasses!”
Vera lifted her glass toward the secretaries, and Lena followed suit, taking her drink without hesitation, though her smile was stiff, betraying her underlying tension.
Queenie, ever the free spirit, downed her drink with ease, appearing completely unfazed.
When it was Chiara’s turn, Vera personally poured her a glass of wine.
“Ms. Lynch, I sense that our paths were meant to cross. How about we hang out sometime, share a meal, and perhaps forge a friendship?” Vera suggested, her smile warm and inviting.
