**TITLE: Silent Roads Remember by Sawyer**
**Chapter 90**
At last, the truth emerged from the lips of the medical staff, casting a shadow over Charlie and Adele. The moment the words left their mouths, Charlie’s expression darkened, transforming from concern to a tempest of anger. Adele, too, felt a jolt of disbelief surge through her, momentarily rendering her speechless.
Charlie, unable to contain his fury, turned sharply to Titus, who appeared utterly unfazed by the storm brewing around him. “You bastard! She’s your wife! Do you even have the slightest clue how to treat her right?” Charlie’s voice was sharp, slicing through the tension like a knife.
Titus, however, remained stoic, his eyes fixed on Chiara, the woman lying in the hospital bed. She was blissfully unaware of the chaos surrounding her, lost in a haze of pain and medication. The agony she experienced was so profound that she required sedatives and a pain pump just to find a moment of respite.
Adele reached out and lightly smacked Charlie’s shoulder, a gentle reminder to temper his rage. He let out a derisive snort, warning, “Your grandma doesn’t know yet. If she finds out, she’ll give you an earful.”
Titus shrugged off Charlie’s words, his mind drifting to Debby instead. “Then you and Mom better keep it quiet,” he replied flatly, his tone devoid of emotion.
Charlie clenched his jaw, frustration boiling within him. “If you ever pull this stunt again, I swear I’ll break your damn legs.”
Titus remained unfazed, his resolve unshaken. His legs belonged to him, and no one, not even his father, would dare to threaten them.
Adele, sensing the tension in the air, interjected, “Step outside for a moment, Charlie. I need to speak with him alone.”
Charlie shot her a look, a mix of concern and indignation. “Make sure you put him in his place. He clearly doesn’t understand his own limits.”
Adele met his gaze with a knowing expression, and Charlie huffed in annoyance before stepping out of the room. The dynamic between Charlie and Titus was a complicated one, a typical father-son relationship marked by constant friction and misunderstanding.
Once alone, Adele settled beside Titus, her demeanor as composed as ever. “Really? You have nothing to say to me?” she asked, her voice steady but curious.
Titus hesitated, the weight of the moment pressing down on him. “I had no idea. It just… happened,” he finally admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
Adele considered his words, believing in the sincerity of his claim. It had to be an accident; she simply could not fathom her son acting so thoughtlessly. The notion that he would send his wife to the hospital, fully aware of her menstrual cycle, was beyond her comprehension.
“But you don’t even know when your wife’s period is. That’s just careless,” Adele pointed out, her tone a mix of disappointment and concern.
Titus’s gaze remained locked on Chiara, lying there so fragile, his expression dark and inscrutable. He chose silence, unwilling to defend himself. He truly hadn’t known, and even when he thought he did, he was woefully mistaken.
Noticing the gloom that enveloped Titus, Adele glanced at Chiara. “Still haven’t managed to cheer her up?” she asked, her voice gentle.
“What does it even mean to cheer her up?” Titus replied, his frustration creeping into his tone.
“Make her feel like she used to, like the woman who adored you,” Adele clarified, her eyes searching his for understanding.
Titus paused, contemplating her words before asserting, “She will.”
Adele smiled softly, her expression warm. “You sure are confident.”
Titus responded coolly, “No matter how much she tries to fight it, she’s always within my grasp. She’ll never escape.”
Adele’s smile widened at his unwavering certainty. She nodded slowly, a hint of mischief in her eyes. “Do you really think you can control everyone in this world?” she teased lightly.
Titus raised an eyebrow, amusement flickering in his gaze as he looked at Chiara, whose pallor had begun to fade. “Not everyone, but her? She’s mine,” he asserted, a quiet confidence lacing his words.
Adele patted his shoulder gently. “Son, I hope you always keep that confidence. But love? It’s the most unpredictable force out there. You’re meticulous, never miss a beat, but I truly hope you can navigate this one successfully.”
Yet, Titus didn’t fully absorb her words. Adele could sense his mind was elsewhere, though she understood that sometimes, a single reminder could spark a moment of clarity. Life had a way of teaching lessons that could only be learned through experience.
Rising slowly, Adele cast one last glance at Chiara before adding, “Honestly, I kind of like how she is now. Back in the day, she cared way too much about you. Not having her own opinions isn’t really a good thing,” she remarked.
Titus couldn’t help but chuckle, a lightness breaking through his earlier tension. “Are you sure you’re my mom?” he asked, half-joking.
Adele turned to him, a playful glint in her eyes. “Alright, I’m heading out. Make sure you look after her.”
With that, Titus stood and walked her to the door. As they exited, Paul appeared, a stack of documents in his arms, engaged in light conversation with Charlie.
