Seeing him leave the field, Sloane walked over to the bench by the door to rest.
After spending most of the day in surgery and then chasing a rogue rooster around a rustic farm-to-table restaurant, she was absolutely exhausted.
But before she even sat down, a flurry of high-pitched clucking echoed through the air.
The massive rooster had been caught!
Logan strolled over, holding his prize up with a victorious smirk. "It didn't exactly require any special skills. I caught it without breaking a sweat."
Sloane was speechless.
Half an hour later, the very bird that had run Sloane ragged was simmering in a rich, savory broth.
Figuring the meat was fully cooked, Sloane gestured to the dish. "Dig in, don't hold back."
She didn't wait for him, immediately diving into her meal with ravenous enthusiasm.
A thick piece of chicken vanished into her mouth in mere seconds.
Logan couldn't help but intervene. "I know you had a personal vendetta against that bird, but eating that fast is a surefire way to ruin your digestion."
Was she eating fast?
This was her normal pace, honed from years of rushed hospital cafeteria breaks.
Still, she deliberately slowed her chewing.
But with the frantic eating paused, an awkward silence settled over the table, making her realize she needed to strike up a conversation.
Not being naturally gifted at small talk, she wracked her brain for a long moment before finally blurting out, "You seem really close with your boss."
"We went to high school together," Logan replied casually.
"Ah, that makes sense," Sloane nodded.
"He got seriously ill back in high school, and I helped take care of him," he added.
Sloane's professional curiosity instantly flared. "Really? What was the diagnosis?"
Logan's hand froze midway to his plate. Did all doctors make small talk like this?
He flashed a dry smile. "Lung nodules, if I remember correctly."
"Well, with lung nodules, everything depends on the size..."
Give her a medical topic, and all her social anxiety vanished. She launched into a passionate, rapid-fire clinical breakdown that lasted a full minute.
It wasn't until she noticed Logan staring at her with an intense, unblinking gaze that she realized she had been rambling.
"You... should keep eating," she stammered, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment.
"I'm full," Logan said, leaning back. "The meal was fantastic, and your medical lecture was actually incredibly fascinating. If my boss had met you back then, he probably wouldn't have suffered half as much."
Sloane let out a modest laugh. "I was just a student back then."
She raised her hand to flag down a waiter for the bill.
Right on cue, Logan stood up. "I'm going to run to the restroom."
Sloane blinked.
