He looked fully capable of making good on the threat without a second thought.
Serena stumbled back in terror, hiding behind her equally horrified friends.
Still, her venom couldn't be totally silenced as she gaped at Sloane. "You're married? Didn't Silas set you up with someone important? And you... you married trash off the street? What is he, a grease monkey?"
Logan was still wearing his rugged Panda Auto Works jumpsuit, unabashedly blue-collar.
Sloane calmly dabbed the tea off her face with a napkin. "That's right. He's a mechanic, and he is my husband."
"You... don't tell me you got a random match from the Civil Affairs Bureau?"
Sloane ignored her, turning her attention back to Logan. "Let's go. Don't waste your breath on them."
Logan shot Serena one final, lethal glare that instantly silenced any remaining snark, leaving her frozen as they walked away.
It wasn't until Sloane and Logan were out of the restaurant that Serena finally found her voice, spitting in absolute disgust. "That pathetic loser actually married a mechanic."
A nasty, triumphant smile broke across her face. "Perfect. She can play the genius doctor all she wants, but she's chained to a grease monkey. She's destined to be poor forever!"

Safely inside the car, the heavy silence stretched out.
Sloane finally looked over at Logan. "Thank you... for what you did back there."
Very few people in this world had ever stood up for her. Aside from her grandmother, he was the only one.
Logan kept his eyes on the road, casually steering through the parking lot. "Never go soft on people like that. If you do, they'll just come back and hit you harder."
"I know. I won't let her walk all over me."
She hesitated before adding, "That was Serena, my half-sister. But we really don't have any kind of relationship."
The rural highway was packed with evening traffic, and Logan was focused on cutting off an aggressive driver trying to merge. "Got it," he murmured absently.
Hearing his nonchalant response, Sloane assumed he had absolutely no interest in her messy family drama.
It was only day two of their marriage, formed with zero emotional foundation. Dumping her personal baggage on him felt deeply inappropriate.
Deciding not to bother him any further, she pulled out her phone and quietly loaded up a gem-matching game.

Valentine Towers, Apartment 2101.
Sloane and Logan had barely stepped inside when both their Bio-Bond Bands simultaneously lit up with a notification:
[Global Fertility Association: Based on your geolocation data, you two spent three incredible hours together today! This is a phenomenal start and a massive green flag for a passionate, sweet marriage ahead!]
Standing in the middle of the living room, they exchanged a wildly awkward glance, both offering strained smiles.
Sloane was just about to bolt for her bedroom when the bands buzzed again.
[Since you've already taken that sweet first step, how about ending the night with a romantic goodnight kiss?]
Sloane felt the color drain from her face.
She slowly pivoted back around, looking at Logan.
