"A young female doctor? Do you mean Sloane Sutton?" She was the only one who fit the description.
Did Sloane actually know the Commissioner?
With backing like that, why had she kept it a secret?
"Regarding Dr. Sutton..." Director York wiped his sweaty brow. "Her skills are outstanding, but we considered her heavy workload and didn't want to burn her out. The public is already criticizing Metro General for overworking our doctors."
"However, if she really wants to stay on the project team, she is welcome back at any time."
"Then put her back on it," the Commissioner ordered.
Director York had to know for sure. "Sir, if I may ask, did Dr. Sutton reach out to you directly?"
"Of course not. The athlete mentioned it to me."
"Ah, then the athlete must have misunderstood the situation. Since he specifically requested her, we will absolutely respect that choice."
Hanging up the phone, Director York fell into deep thought.
He knew Sloane's parents were divorced, she practically lived at the hospital this past year, and she even had to rely on the GFA lottery to get a husband. She clearly had no powerful connections.
So it really was the athlete!
Director York cursed inwardly: That dirty old man! Fighting for his life in a hospital bed and still lusting after beautiful women!

During her lunch break, Sloane headed to the buffet-style cafeteria across the street from the hospital.
The restaurant was affordable and offered a great variety. Whenever she had a normal shift, she liked to eat here.
She had just found a seat when she spotted Beatrice Lennox grabbing food nearby.
The older woman was already at the buffet line.
Despite her age, she moved with surprising agility.
She walked over to the salad bar first and took a quick glance.
Sloane figured she must love her greens, as older folks usually preferred a lighter, healthier diet.
But Beatrice shook her head and moved straight to the carbohydrate section.
Sloane guessed she might go for oatmeal or a whole-wheat sandwich, something easy to digest.
Yet Beatrice shook her head again.
Sloane wondered if the restaurant simply didn't suit her palate.
Suddenly, Beatrice pivoted and marched right over to the dessert station.
