Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 27

Sloane's heart plummeted, as if something sharp had just pierced it.

Could true love not even exist in a simulated game?

Arthur urgently pressed her. "Ms. Marlene, we have to go. The only reason you got close to Julian was to get the seal anyway, right?"

Sloane's heart sank even further.

He was right. Her character had an agenda too.

She was condemning Julian for being ruthless, but wasn't Marlene doing the exact same thing?

Wasn't it all just smoke and mirrors?

Taking a deep breath, Sloane cast one last glance at the icy, unreadable Julian before turning and following Arthur out into the night.

Disguised as a common civilian, Sloane was tucked away in a safehouse down a narrow alley.

Her mission within the immersive game was officially complete.

The rest of the narrative would rely on the psychological warfare between the military, the government, and the underground forces.

But it wasn't long before word reached the streets that Commander Sterling had been killed in action.

Sloane felt a heavy knot form in her stomach. She immediately sought out a street food vendor NPC for information.

"Is it true Commander Sterling is dead?"

"Of course he is. His faction was already on its last legs, and once his command seal went missing, the underground forces used it to rally his troops against the enemy. He was left with only a tiny squad to defend himself. Naturally, he died in combat."

Sloane winced as if she had been physically struck.

He had handed that seal directly to her.

The vendor continued gossiping. "Word on the street is that the Commander was a fool for love. He gave his seal to his mistress on purpose, knowing full well she was an enemy spy. Even heroes can't survive a beautiful woman."

Sloane murmured, "...But he had seven wives."

"Oh, those wives? He paid them off and sent them away right before he married Marlene Sutton. Didn't you know?"

Sloane's heart went into a devastating freefall.

His words echoed relentlessly in her ears.
