Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 32

"You should take it, then."

"Yeah."

Sloane lifted her wrist and saw the caller ID on her band: Silas Sutton.

Her previously boiling blood seemed to turn to ice in an instant.

She stared fixedly at that cold, distant name.

Logan saw it too. He remembered Silas Sutton was her biological father.

Knowing it wasn't his place to interfere in her family matters, he sat down on the sofa and pretended to read a book.

Sloane didn't take the call in the living room; she retreated to her bedroom.

While Silas waited for Sloane to pick up, he was forced to listen to the Global Fertility Association's automated, sassy hold message echoing through the line:

[Can you read the room? The happy couple is literally locking lips right now, and you're calling like it's a matter of life and death! Are you trying to be a third wheel, or have you just never been in a relationship?]

Silas's frown deepened.

He knew the GFA issued mandatory tracking bands. His own secretary had been assigned a partner at the Civil Affairs Bureau, and that band constantly spammed them with cheesy tasks. Morning kisses, goodnight kisses—it was completely undignified!

Sloane was probably right in the middle of completing one of those tasks.

[Have some shame, will you? If it isn't an emergency, can't it wait? You just have to desperately prove how important you are, don't you?]

Silas was subjected to a full minute of berating before Sloane finally answered the phone.

"Hello!"

"Sloane, did you seriously go to the Civil Affairs Bureau and get yourself assigned a husband?" Silas immediately lashed out.

Listening to that voice—so familiar yet so incredibly alien—Sloane replied with a single word. "Yes."

Hearing that nonchalant confirmation made Silas's head throb.

"Ever since you were little, no matter what I come to you for, you always brush me off with a single word. Sloane, have you ever respected me as your father?"

Sloane remained silent.

Her only impressions of her father were distance, strictness, and blatant favoritism.
