Chapter 540 The One Waiting for Her

Tobias moved the instant the shot came. He was fast, fast enough to avoid a fatal hit, but the bullet still tore through his shoulder.
A muffled groan escaped him as blood spread quickly through the fabric.
The soldiers on board went on full alert at once. Clutching his injured shoulder, Tobias ducked into a blind corner of the cabin. From there, he could just make out Thora’s figure, his eyes dark and cold.
He struggled to pull out his pistol and fire back, but the wound was in the shoulder of his dominant arm. He could barely put any strength into it.
“She attacked the General!”
The soldiers spotted Thora as well and immediately aimed at her yacht.
Thora curled her lips into a cold smile, holstered her gun, and slammed the throttle forward. Her yacht shot across the water like a shell.
“After her!”
Tobias’s ship accelerated in pursuit, and a rain of bullets tore toward Thora.
But the sea wind was fierce, throwing off their aim, and Thora’s yacht was moving too fast for the shots to pose any real threat. They only punched dense clusters of holes into the hull. Fuel began leaking out at
once.
Thora frowned, about to repair it with her ability, when her gaze suddenly shifted sideways. A yacht had come up beside her without her noticing, pacing her perfectly.
“Roxen?” Thora called out.
On the deck stood Roxen, dressed in a white and gold military uniform that was clearly not regulation, smiling at her. That white and gold uniform instantly made Thora think of a certain empire.
Roxen bent slightly at the waist in a gentlemanly gesture and extended an invitation. “Need some help?”
By then, smoke was already rising from the stern of Thora’s yacht, and the vessel was beginning to sink.
She didn’t waste a second. She sprang lightly across the gap and landed steadily on Roxen’s deck. Almost at the same moment, her own yacht disappeared beneath the sea.
“Thank you.” Thora gave him a nod. Even without him, she could have gotten away unharmed.
Roxen lifted a brow. “You’re welcome. Think of it as one last favor for a junior schoolmate.”
As he spoke, he turned to look behind them. Thora followed his gaze toward Tobias’s ship.
At that exact moment, the vessel exploded. A thunderous blast ripped through the air, and the sea erupted into flames.
Thora’s expression sharpened as she turned to Roxen. “You did that?”

She had only shot Tobias once, more a warning than an execution. Whether he lived or died had been up to him. And since Roxen had appeared right on cue, no one else seemed remotely suspicious.
Their yacht was already pulling farther and farther away, but they could still see several small speedboats bursting out through the fire behind them.
Roxen didn’t deny it. “If he likes using bombs so much, then as an old classmate, it only seems fair to give him one back.”
As he said it, he turned to look at Thora beside him. His eyes settled on her profile, and for a few seconds, he seemed to forget himself before finally looking away.
A faint smile touched Thora’s lips. “You’re right.”
Three years ago, Roxen had been the biggest dark horse among the incoming freshmen at Blue Star Military Academy. Tobias had probably seen him as a threat from the start. There had to have been plenty of conflict between them.
In truth, Thora didn’t think Tobias had done anything wrong. He was undeniably powerful, or he wouldn’t have remained in the top three of the overall combat rankings for so long. He also had a following, which was proof enough of his leadership. In every respect, he was one of the best.
But people stood in different positions, received different orders, and naturally made different choices.
At the academy, strict rules and overwhelming authority kept violent conflict to a minimum. Outside the academy, Tobias using ruthless methods to eliminate a rival was hardly unusual. He had simply picked the wrong target.
Among the strong, clashes and power struggles were never about right or wrong. They were only about who survived in the end. And clearly, both of them intended to be the last one standing.
The yacht carved a long arc across the sea as the salty wind swept over the deck. Thora and Roxen stood side by side, and after the explosion, neither of them spoke again.
Only after a long while did Roxen break the silence.
“You’re heading straight back to your empire?”
Thora looked ahead and gave a quiet hum in reply.
“With your ability and your current status, any empire should welcome you as an honored guest.” What he meant was simple. She didn’t have to limit herself to the Astralis Empire.
The line of Thora’s lips curved slightly, “Are you trying to poach me?”
Roxen smiled. “Not exactly, I just think your feelings for Astralis may not be all that patriotic.”
He was still trying to poach her, only in a roundabout way. And he truly believed she wasn’t the kind of person who would be bound by patriotism. In his view, the stronger and broader a person became, the less likely they were to confine themselves to a single empire,
“I’m a soldier.” Thora lifted her chin, her voice calm and unwavering. “From the very beginning, I was a soldier of Astralis. The moment I put on that uniform, the word Astralis became part of my duty.” She

paused, then said with quiet certainty, “And that is the only place worth returning to.”
Roxen frowned, unable to hide his confusion.
Thora looked into the distance and said softly, “He’s waiting for me.”
The words were light, almost swallowed by the sea wind, but they made Roxen press his lips together. Something unreadable flickered deep in his emerald eyes.
After a long moment, Thora spoke again and turned the question back on him.
“You’re the same as me, aren’t you? So why are you still going back to your empire?”
