Chapter 12 You Just Knew Her Recently?

Tears swelled in Jane’s eyes at once, her voice trembling with sobs. “Do you still hold a grudge against me? If it upsets you this much, I’ll talk to Mr. Clarke and hand the project back.”

Sympathy flooded Lauren at Jane’s tearful face. She pulled the girl behind her, snapping at Chloe in irritation, “Why are you so petty? Jane is practically your sister-she’s been caring for me in your stead. Instead of being grateful, you nitpick over a single

interview.”

Jane whispered, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue and sniffling softly, “Mrs. Lauren Summers, please don’t quarrel with Chloe because of me. It’s all my fault.

“I only asked casually. If Chloe doesn’t have the materials, that’s fine-I’ll prepare my own. Tomorrow I’ll ask my friend about Ethan. His cousin Sonia Price and I are close, so don’t worry.”

Surprise lit up Lauren’s features instantly. “You’re so capable, Jane-actually knowing someone from the Price family! I heard Ethan dotes on his cousin fiercely. You must maintain that bond. Julian, drive Jane there tomorrow.”

Forging a connection with them through Jane would be a game-changer for their business prospects.

Julian paid no heed to Chloe’s feelings in the moment.

His face lit up with enthusiasm. “I’ll drive you tomorrow without fail.”

“Wonderful,” Jane replied, blushing as she nodded.

Her gaze locked on Chloe’s retreating figure upstairs, a glint of triumph sparking in her eyes.

Inside her bedroom, Chloe twisted the lock behind her and pulled up real estate agent listings online.

She quickly found a mid-range community with a studio. apartment that looked appealing in the virtual tour.

Rent came to 5,000 dollars a month.

The inheritance from her adoptive parents hadn’t cleared yet- per their will, she could only claim it after marrying Ethan.

Years of marriage had left her with little savings, most of which went to upholding the “Mrs. Summers” facade.

Lauren had insisted that as Julian’s wife, her lifestyle must march the family’s status in every way.

Unwilling to make Julian “lose face,” Chloe had splurged to keep up appearances―leaving her short on funds for a place of her

own.

She owned plenty of luxury goods and the jewelry she’d tricked Julian into gifting her, but liquidating those items would take

time.

Renting the apartment first seemed the only option.

She’d think of an excuse to move out later, escaping the daily annoyance of sharing a roof with Lauren, Julian, and Jane.

Chloe added the agent’s contact and scheduled a viewing.

Just then, her phone rang with an unknown number.

After a moment’s hesitation, she swiped to answer.

“Hello, this is Chloe.”

“Hello, Ethan’s fiancée!” The blunt greeting took Chloe by surprise, making her nearly choke on her own breath.

“I’m Sonia Price,” the girl chirped, her voice lively yet strangely familiar.

Sonia-Ethan’s cousin, the very person Jane had just

mentioned.

“Hello. How can I help you?” Chloe crossed to the balcony, lowering her voice to avoid being overheard.

“Can we meet for lunch tomorrow, Chloe?”

Chloe fell silent. Meeting Ethan’s family felt inappropriate, given her plan to call off the engagement.

But the thought of the massive inheritance made her hesitate.

She pressed her lips together and agreed, “Sure.”

“I’ll send you the address later. See you tomorrow, Chloe!” Sonia hung up, grinning widely.

She stepped over to her wardrobe and began pulling out brand-new outfits, holding each one up to the full-length mirror. “This one? Or… maybe this one?”

“Ms. Price, you would look lovely in any of them,” the maid answered politely.

Sonia shot her a teasing look. “What do you know? This isn’t just any ordinary meeting-I have to look absolutely perfect. I’m seeing Ethan’s fiancée tomorrow to convince her to stay with him.”

She placed her hands on her hips and nodded toward the display cabinet inside her walk-in closet.

“Wrap up the latest Patek Philippe, those diamond earrings, and that one-all of them. I’m giving them to her as a gift.”

The maid gaped in shock, saying, “Ms. Price, the engagement isn’t finalized yet. Are you certain about gifting her such

valuable items?”

The collection was worth tens of millions.

The Price family might have money, but that didn’t mean she should spend it like this.

“You don’t understand. We need to show Chloe our sincerity. Ethan finally agreed to marry-we can’t let this fall through. With his personality, who knows how long we’ll wait for him to commit again?” Sonia fretted over her cousin’s love life.

“Men’s value fades after thirty. I need to get Ethan married while he’s still in his prime.” She clenched her fists resolutely.

“Who’s fading in value?” A cold, crisp voice came from the doorway.

Sonia spun around to find Ethan leaning against the doorframe, his presence unannounced.

No one knew how long he’d been listening. She stuck out her tongue, dropping her willful act and letting her hands hang geatly at her sides.

Seizing the opportunity, the maid hurried to explain Sonia’s plan, “It’s not that the young lady is unworthy, but gifting so much at once might scare her.”

It could even spark misunderstandings-as if Ethan was desperate to keep her.

Sonia pouted, ready to argue, but a calm glance from Ethan silenced her. He stared at the pile of expensive jewelry on the table for a long, tense moment.

“Put them away,” he ordered.
