Chapter 13 Sonia Got Revenge for Chloe

Jane followed her friend Nina Quinn inside, completely unaware of Chloe waiting outside the café.

Nina leaned close, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Watch what you say Ms. Price has a terrible temper.”

With a nervous nod, Jane smoothed her tweed suit.

Across the room, Sonia idly stirred her coffee, her gaze drifting again and again to her silent phone.

Where’s Chloe?

“Sonia,” Nina called out, drawing her attention.

Sonia looked up, her eyes briefly scanning Nina before settling on the unfamiliar woman beside her.

“What’s up?” Sonia’s tone was flat, disinterested.

Forcing a smile, Nina pulled out a chair and sat without invitation. “I wanted to introduce you to a friend. This is Jane Crawford, a war correspondent just back from overseas.”

she hated meeting strangers.

Only loyalty and Jane’s relentless pestering-had pushed Nina into arranging this meeting, knowing full well it might set Sonia off.

The spoon in Sonia’s coffee went still.

Jane offered a polished, sweet smile. “Ms. Price, it’s a pleasure.”

Finally, Sonia lifted her eyes.

Though Jane appeared younger, Jane felt an indescribable sense of pressure.

Sonia said nothing, her gaze traveling slowly from Jane’s head. down to her shoes.

A cold, mocking laugh escaped her as she turned to Nina. “Why do you keep dragging strangers to my table? And that perfume- you know I can’t stand it.”

Sonia never bothered to hide her irritation, no matter the

company.

Heat rushed to Jane’s face. No one had ever humiliated her so openly. She’d chosen one of the most popular, sought-after perfumes from a luxury brand-how could anyone find it offensive?

“That perfume-it reeks of desperation,” Sonia added, wrinkling her nose in clear disgust.

This was the woman who’d bullied Chloe-and today, Sonia was determined to stand her ground.

Tears stung Jane’s eyes, but she swallowed the embarrassment.

Pretending not to hear the jab, she extended a carefully wrapped gift. “Ms. Price, this is for you.”

Sonia spared the box the briefest glance but made no move to take it. Instead, she resumed stirring her coffee, the spoon circling lazily.

Jane gritted her teeth, frustration locking her jaw. Confused by Sonia’s hostility, Nina gave Jane’s sleeve a subtle tug-a silent plea to stay calm.

Drawing a steadying breath, Jane sat down, painting on an ingratiating smile. “Ms. Price, our magazine is scheduled to interview Mr. Price next week. I was hoping you could tell me a bit about him-”

“You’re interviewing Ethan?” Sonia’s eyes narrowed.

“Yes,” Jane replied, her voice wavering slightly under Sonia’s

scrutiny.

Sonia’s voice was silk wrapped around a blade, the omission of Chloe’s name deliberate, a calculated erasure that felt louder than any accusation.

“S-She’s busy,” Jane mumbled, the excuse sounding frail even to her own ears.

“Did you

steal her slot?” Sonia’s tone turned razor-sharp. “I’ve heard the competition in your field is vicious. Nina, your friend isn’t the type to pull something so underhanded, is she?”

Nina fell silent, lost for words. Jane dug her nails into her thigh, leaving faint crescent marks in the fabric.

“She gave it up voluntarily. Said she wanted to take some time off lately,” Jane lied, the smile on her face growing strained.

“Is that so-” Suddenly, Sonia’s expression shifted.

She stood up, waving eagerly toward the entrance. “Ms. Shaw!”

Chloe had half-expected to be called “Ethan’s fiancée” again, as Sonia had done over the phone.

Relieved by the more formal address, she made her way to the table.

Jane turned-and her face paled at the sight. “Chloe? What are Mog doing here?”

Chloe offered only a passing glance before turning politely to Sonia. “Ms. Price.”

The ice in Sonia’s demeanor melted instantly. Her face brightened into a warm, eager smile. “Ms. Shaw, you’re even lovelier in person than on screen.”

She quickly retrieved the gift box, presenting it to Chloe like something precious. “This is for you. I hope you like it.”

A stunned silence settled over Nina and Jane.

Had Sonia developed a split personality?

And more perplexingly, how had Chloe become so close to her?

The gift was unexpected. Chloe’s immediate instinct was to refuse, but the words dissolved in her throat under Sonia’s bright, eager gaze.

She opened the velvet box for a fleeting moment,

The flash of diamonds within was sharp enough to make Jane visibly flinch.

“Thank you,” Chloe said, tucking the box swiftly into her handbag.

She would return it later. Now was not the time.

Jane began, forcing a brittle smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Chloe, you know Ms. Price?”

An eyebrow arched in deliberate amusement. “We’ve met. When you told Mr. Clarke you had a contact at Apex Group, was it

Sonia you meant?” Chloe asked, her tone deceptively light.

Jane’s face underwent a comical contortion. “Why didn’t you

mention it?”

“Perhaps I prefer to be discreet,” Chloe said.

Sonia’s voice, honeyed and slow, cut through the air. “I only met you today. Do you often claim such recent acquaintances as professional connections, Ms. Crawford?”

“I wasn’t referring to you, Ms. Price…” Jane stammered, color rising in her cheeks.

“Then who? I know every senior executive at Apex Group.” Sonia leaned back, a spectator in her own scene.

Chloe watched, too, a flicker of genuine amusement in her eyes as Jane’s face deepened to an ugly shade of puce.

Jane’s mouth opened and closed for a long moment, unable to produce a single name.
