Chapter 16 Became Chloe’s Backdrop
Chloe finally caved to Jasper’s request. After pouring hours into securing the interview, she’d never really planned to let Jane hold onto that spot.
The next morning, she stepped into the magazine office, and Mandy’s face brightened instantly.
She hurried over, voice dropping to a whisper. “Heard Jane got kicked out of Apex Group yesterday. Knew Mr. Clarke would beg you to come back.”
Tough, high-stakes interviews had always fallen to Chloe during her tenure at Velocity Magazine.
No one could fathom what had made Jasper let Jane overstep so blatantly.
“Put her in her place, She’s been insufferably arrogant around
here these past few days,” Mandy urged, leaning in slightly.
“Stick to your work, and I’ll treat you to dinner soon.” Chloe patted Mandy’s shoulder lightly before heading for the
conference room.

The atmosphere was a stark contrast to their last meeting-a storm cloud hung over Jane’s face, and an almost inaudible huff escaped her as Chloe strode in, radiating confidence.
In Jane’s mind, Chloe had moved out of the Summers Manor, after all; this poise must have been forced.
Chloe’s gaze flicked briefly over Jane before settling on Jasper. “Mr. Clarke.”
Anxiety had worn Jasper thin, his voice tight with strain. “Thank goodness you’re here. Head to Apex Group this afternoon-you have to make a strong impression. Bring Jane with you.”
He shot a wary glance at Chloe, half-expecting refusal.
Relief washed over him when she showed no sign of protest.
“Understood.”
“Still have your old interview materials? If not, we can use Jane’s set,” Jasper added.
“I have my own,” Chloe replied calmly.
Jane sprang to her feet, agitation flaring. “You said

them away!”
“You also said the interview would go perfectly for you. How’d

that work out?” Chloe shot back.
Rage bubbled in Jane’s chest, sharp enough to make her head spin.
Chloe had been toying with her all along.
After lunch, Chloe messaged Liam on WhatsApp, asking if Ethan was available that day. He called back immediately.
“Ms. Shaw, are you planning to stop by today?” Liam’s voice came through clearly over the line.
“I am. Will Mr. Price be free for an interview this afternoon?”
she asked.
“Feel free to come anytime.”
A short pause followed. “Okay.”
Chloe couldn’t shake the sense that Liam was in an unusually cheerful mood, though she couldn’t pinpoint why.
Once the lunch break ended, Chloe drove to Apex Group with Jane in the passenger seat.
Jane stared at the car’s luxury finishes, bitterness twisting in her
chest.

Everything should have been hers, she fumed. If not for that stubborn Logan in the Summers family, she’d have married Julian long ago.
The irony brought a smile to Chloe’s lips. Jane had it all wrong -the Mercedes was Logan’s welcome present, not a token from Julian.
Jane clearly jumped to the wrong conclusion, and Chloe chose to play along.
“Julian’s been wonderful. I didn’t want the car at first, but he insisted it was necessary for my commute.” She heaved a soft, feigned sigh. “My relationship with Julian would be perfect if not for his mother.”
A glimpse to the side revealed Jane’s features tightening, her skin turning a bloodless white. Inside, Chloe felt a cold smirk take root.
Jane retorted, emphasizing each word, “You should be more understanding. Julian and I grew up together. Mrs. Lauren Summers favors me–it’s only natural. I’m only staying at the house for a few more days.”
She meant to make it clear she held a far more important place in the Summers household than Chloe ever could, even as “Julian’s wife”.

“Doesn’t your boyfriend mind you living in another man’s home?” Chloe asked.
Jane froze, drawing a blank as she scrambled to recall which fake boyfriend she’d invented.
She finally recovered, forcing a hollow laugh. “Of course not. He knows I’m staying with Julian and says he’s glad to see me when he picks Julian up each morning.”
“How very generous of him,” Chloe drawled, dragging out the words.
Jane forced a weak smile and turned to stare out the window, unwilling to say more. She was torn part of her hoped Chloe would uncover her real relationship with Julian, while the other dreaded the confrontation that would follow.
Julian would blame her for the mess, without a doubt.
Relief came when the car pulled into Apex Group’s parking
garage.
They took the elevator to the lobby, where Chloe approached the front desk.
“Hello. I’m a reporter from Velocity Magazine, here for an exclusive interview with your CEO.” She handed over her press eredentials.

The receptionist checked the appointment log and handed the credentials back. “I’m sorry, but there’s no appointment under your name.”
Her eyes flicked to Jane-she remembered the woman being escorted out by Liam just the day before. A new face wouldn’t smooth over that earlier rejection.
Chloe raised an eyebrow. Had Liam forgotten to notify the receptionist?
“Looks like you’re not as well-connected as you thought. At least I made it to the executive floor yesterday. You can’t even get past the lobby. I thought you were close to Ms. Price,” Jane quipped.
She’d expected Chloe to be far more capable, and disappointment fueled her mockery.
Chloe ignored the taunt and dialed Liam’s number.
“Mr. Harris, this is Chloe. I’m in the lobby now… Alright, I’ll wait here.”
Jane narrowed her eyes.
Mr. Harris?
She recognized the name as Ethan’s long-time assistant-the man who served as his right hand at Apex Group.
