Chapter 29 Defending His Fiancée
She turned around to look for Ethan, but the moment she spun around, she nearly jumped out of her skin. He was right there beside her, those dark, unreadable eyes locked on hers.
Her heart skipped a beat.
“What’s wrong?”
There was a hint of amusement in Ethan’s eyes, though his voice stayed perfectly calm.
“Nothing.”
How does he just sneak up on people like that?
Chloe cleared her throat and smiled. “Can I use your name for something?”
Ethan didn’t even ask what for. He just gestured casually. “Go for it.”
Chloe grinned and walked over to the staff member on the second floor.
Ethan watched her chat with the employee, that mischievous. look in her eyes making his lips curve into the faintest smile as he waited for her to come back.

After the staff member headed downstairs, Chloe returned to his
side.
“Thanks.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing much, just… having a little fun with her.”
Chloe peeked down at the first floor, deliberately positioning Ethan between her and the view in case Jane looked up.
From his angle, Ethan could see the top of her head. The overhead lights caught her hair, making it shine with a soft gleam. Almost without thinking, he reached out and gently touched the ends of her hair.
Chloe was completely oblivious, too busy watching the drama unfold below.
Jane had picked out a mermaid-style dress. “This one, I want to try it on.”
The manager walked over and glanced at her choice, “I’m sorry, Ms. Crawford. That one’s not available.”
Jane’s face darkened as she pointed to a deep V-neck style. “Fine, this one then.”

The manager’s expression didn’t change.
“What do you mean it’s not available? What do you have in this place?”
The manager remained perfectly composed. “Everything except those two you just picked.”
Jane. “…”
She took a deep breath and pointed to another dress. “This one.”
The manager took a look, looking genuinely apologetic.
“Didn’t you just say you had everything except those first two?”
“We do have that one, but… the last bride who wore it turned out to be someone’s mistress and got attacked. People think it’s cursed. I wouldn’t feel right recommending it.”
Jane felt like she was choking. Was this woman seriously messing with her right now?
She tried several more dresses, and each time the manager calmly explained why it wasn’t a good choice, “Oh, that bride got divorced,” “That one became a widow,” “Terrible car accident…”
Jane finally lost it.

“Fine! This one then! You have all these dresses on display-you can’t possibly tell me you don’t have this one too!”
She jabbed her finger at the wedding dress on the window mannequin.
The manager looked over and said flatly, “We do have that one in your size, but it’s already been claimed by a customer upstairs. It’s just here for display. Sorry.”
Jane nearly passed out from pure rage.
“Are you people deliberately screwing with me?”
Did they think she was an idiot?
“Oh no, Ms. Crawford, you’re a valued customer. But we also have VIP clients, platinum members… Store policy. My hands are tied.”
Chloe hadn’t expected the manager to be such a good actress. She couldn’t help letting out a little laugh.
She tried to cover her mouth, but it was too late.
Jane heard it and looked up toward the second floor. Was that Chloe’s voice?

brushing off the manager’s protests.
“Ms. Crawford, you can’t go up there!”
“Get out of my way!”
Jane pushed past the manager and stormed upstairs.
Chloe had to be here-why else would this manager be giving her such a hard time?
“Chloe, you-”
Her voice died in her throat.
Jane stared at the man with his back to her, completely speechless. “Mr. Price?”
It really was Ethan Price!
He was sitting on the couch with a laptop beside him, those cold eyes now fixed on her.
The second floor was empty except for a female employee, but there was a white purse on the couch that looked familiar, though she couldn’t place where she’d seen it.
So there was another woman up here… Jane’s eyes drifted toward the fitting room.

Just as she started to move, a cold voice stopped her dead.
“Guess the Crawfords never taught you manners-barging in while my fiancée’s trying on wedding dresses. What would James think?”
Jane froze, suddenly remembering Ethan was still sitting right there.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Price…”
“Oh wait.”
Ethan’s tone was almost thoughtful. “I forgot-You’re not James’s real daughter, are you?”
Nothing got under her skin faster than someone bringing up her birth.
