Maelis didn’t quite get it at first, but Dorian’s eyes lit up with sudden realization. “Exactly. After all these years of devotion, are you just going to let it got That would be letting Jerome off way too easy.”

Maelis blinked. “But I was the one who mistook the person.”

Sophia scoffed, “Are you really sure you were the one who made the mistake?”

Maelis stared blankly at Sophia. She was just a child back then. After being kidnapped and blindfolded, she woke up in the hospital. All she heard was that Jerome saved her, and he was badly injured.

Maelis wanted to say something but hesitated. “I…” Everything she knew had come from other people’s words.

Dorian, quick–witted as ever, suddenly realized. “Wait, could someone have misled you?”

Maelis fell silent. She gazed at Sophia with hopeful eyes, silently pleading for an answer.

Sophia poured herself a cup of coffee and took a delicate sip. Her index finger absently traced the rim of the cup. “Over a decade ago, the Bennett family nearly went bankrupt. After receiving the Snow family’s assistance, they became what we know today.”

Dorian nearly blurted out, “Holy shit!” He caught himself, then stammered, “Wait, this was all planned?”

Maelis snapped out of her stupor. Fueled by alcohol, she slammed the table and shot up from her seat, shouting, “Those goddamn liars. It wasn’t my mistake. They made me believe it was Jerome. I’m going to make them pay for this.”

In her drunken Kaste, Maelis stumbled in her high heels, nearly twisting her ankle, but caught herself by grabbing Sophia’s arm.

Her ankle throbbed with pain, and with flushed cheeks betraying her drunken state, she burst into tears again. Slurring her words, she sobbed, “I’m gonna make them pay. They lied to me, they took advantage of me.”

Maelis fumbled for her phone and tearfully called Frank, sobbing uncontrollably, “Daddy, I got tricked. They lied to me.”

Frank was so shocked he nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard this. Sophia calmly took over the call and said a few reassuring words. After hanging up, they waited for Frank to send someone to pick Maelis up.

Maelis leaned heavily against Sophia, bursting into loud, drunken søbs. “Why did they lie to me?” she wailed, her voice thick with tears and frustration.

Sophia wrinkled her nose at the reek of alcohol on Maelis and pushed her away.

After being pushed away, the tipsy Maelis stumbled back and clung desperately to Sophia. Slurring her words, she wailed, “No wonder he never liked me. That bastard’s a liar. He fooled me, Oh, my youth. I swear, I won’t let him get away with this.”

Sophia remained silent.

Dorian glanced at Sophia, then his eyes landed on her bandaged hand. “Sophia, did you hurt your hand?” he asked. She was fine when they went to une police station yesterday, but after they left, she hid her hand in her pocket.

Sophia responded absentmindedly, then eyed Dorian’s T–shirt. “That shirt of yours…”

Dorian jumped up like a kid showing off his prized possession, spun around in front of her, and pointed to his left chest. “I put the QR code here. At first glance, it totally looks like a brand logo, doesn’t it?”

Sophia shrugged and replied flatly, “Not bad.“/

Dorian grinned, his eyes narrowing into crescents as he flashed his two little canine teeth. “I’ve got a whole stack of QR code shirts at home. I wear a different one every day, no repeats.”

Chapter 111

Sophia thought it was fine on herself, but for some reason, she found if a little off seeing Dorian wear it.

After Maolis’s family came to pick her up, Sophia and Dorian got ready to leave the restaurant. As they walked through the lobby, they overhasil be gossiping about Maelis and Jerome.

“Is Maelis really going to break off her engagement with Jerome? She can’t be serious, right?”

Someone scoffed, “Who cares if it’s real or not? Maelis has pulled this stunt before, but every time, she comes crawling back to Jerome. It’s just typical womanly theatrics.”

“Yeah, just wait–Maelis will come crawling back to apologize soon enough.”

Sophia and Dorian exchanged a glance, neither of them intending to get involved. But then, a different kind of gossip caught their attention.

“Look, Sophia just showed up. That must mean the rumor about Maelis calling off the engagement is true.”

“What’s Sophia got to do with it?”

“Don’t you know?” someone whispered. “Wherever Sophia shows up, trouble’s never far behind.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“To put it bluntly, whenever Sophia shows up, you know someone’s bound to get unlucky.”

“No way, that’s so jinxed.”

“Word’s gotten around. Anyone who crosses paths with her is doomed. If you see her, you’d better steer clear, or you might end up in deep trouble without even knowing why.”

“Well, let’s see how the Snow family reacts.”

Sophia frowned. She was rather angry that they dared to spread such outrageous rumors, painting her as a jinx.

Dorian looked at Sophia, his wide, round eyes sparkling with mischief. “Sophia, they’re spreading rumors about you. Should we go teach them a lesson?”

Sophia smirked, “Well, it’s not entirely baseless gossip. After all, things never end well for anyone who crosses me.”

Dorian said, “That’s only because you’re so tough, Sophia. But what if you weren’t?” Sophia shot him a look, then called out sharply, “Jackson!”

A chill ran down Jackson’s spine at the sound of that voice. Forcing an awkward smile, he stammered, “Uh… Ms. Chandler, is there something you need?”

Sophia said with a sardonic smile, “I just heard someone call me a jinx.”

Jackson jolted, eyes wide with panic. “No! Absolutely nothing of the sort!”

Sophia scanned the crowd and spotted Fayman and Finn glaring daggers at her. With a smirk, she continued, “You’re right. I’m a jinx. So you’d better not cross me. At best, you’ll go bankrupt; at worst, you’ll be enjoying three square meals behind bars.”

Jackson gulped, a sudden chill creeping down his neck.

Sophia narrowed her eyes at him. “Go tell your parents to stay the hell away from the Bennett family.”
