Chapter 40

Howard was so stunned that he could barely get a word out.

Sophia tilted her head, looking smug. She said, “Howard, as long as the money’s good, I do whatever you want.”

Howard was so furious that he couldn’t even speak,

The livestream chat exploded with comments, One said: (Sophia, who knew you were this kind of genius? So it’s all about the money? Guess Howard didn’t pay up yesterday

Another said: (Even geniuses have their price. Next time when someone calls me out for chasing money, I’ll just say, ‘Look, even Sophia does it

Someone said: Wait, isn’t the Chandler family supposed to be loaded? Why does Sophia feel like one of us, a regular working stiff?

One said: (Exactly. Look at the others. Let’s not talk about Howard and Heather. Even Yvette’s rocking brand new designer dress, and her accessories scream high end]

A person added: [Everyone else is glammed up, but Sop

Sophia’s out here with a bare face and a tracksuit we could afford. Relatable queen.

Sophia’s words hung in the air, leaving the room in awkward silence.

Heather thought it was a mistake to let Sophia appear on the variety show. She thought, At home, her behavior was manageable. But now, with countless viewers watching her every move, she has turned into a laughingstock

“Sophia, didn’t you say you were meeting a friend to go shopping? Don’t keep her waiting,” Heather said, handing Sophia a credit card

Sophia glanced at the credit card and immediately understood that Heather just wanted her out of the way. She thought, ‘No problem. If I don’t have a friend, I can always make one up. No one will refuse money!

“Thanks, Mom. Love you,” Sophia said with a bright, sugary smile. She even formed a heart with her fingers as she took the card.

Heather fraze, feeling an inexplicable chill run down her spine

Sophia went upstairs and came back down carrying a box and a large backpack. Flashing a cheerful smile, she said, “Mom, Yvetta, I’m heading out. I‘ bring back some gifts for you both later.”

Yvette felt a sudden chill run down her spine, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on why.

The livestream chat exploded with comments.

[Sophia is just too adorable. Look at her delicate features, those big, bright eyes, and her flawless skin. She’s not even wearing makeup. And that smile is so sweet and radiant. Even her voice is so pleasant to listen to.]

I just don’t get it. How could someone this gorgeous and brilliant have been dragged through the mud like that before?]

[Sophia’s got that campus queen vibe. She looks so natural and confident on camera. But Yvette… well.

[What’s up with Yvette? Why does she always keep her head down?)

Isn’t it obvious? The whole ‘homewrecker thing hasn’t been cleared up yet. Seriously, why would someone from such a good family stoop to that?]

[That was cleared up ages ago. Yvette and Kevin grew up together. They were childhood friends. Yvette even lived at Kevin’s house for years when they were kids. They’re like brother and sister.

Bless your boyfriend (or husband) if he has a sister like Yvette,

Some viewers who had joined the livestream because of Sophia left as soon as she did, causing the viewership to drop sharply

Howard, oblivious to the arguments happening in the chat, only noticed Sophia’s departure and immediately felt as though the air had cleared. Just then, his phone rang. It was his agent, Alfred.

Aware of Howard’s stubbornness and difficult personality, Alfred remained calm. Howard might lack talent, but his good looks had always been his saving grace.

“Of course I’m sure,” Howard replied confidently. He thought, I am a top–tier celebrity, and Sophia is nothing compared to me

Sophis grabbed the credit card Heather had given her, called a cab, and headed straight to Starbucks. Wearing a hat and sunglasses, she carried a box inside.

To ensure the box was taken care of, Sophia offered the staff a 66–dollar tip. The staff declined. Sophia didn’t push further, she ordered a coffee and a sundae, found a quiet corner, and pulled out her laptop from her bag

She put on her headphones and opened Howard’s livestream. Seeing some viewers mentioning her, Sophia raised an eyebrow in surprise. She thought, “Figures. Howard’s fans know how to keep his numbers up.”
