Chapter 41

Chapter 41

Sophia wasn’t surprised. She chuckled and said, “Is that so?”

James said, “Ms. Chandler, I need you to give me the full story; every detail counts.”

Sensing his frustration, Sophia reassured him, “Don’t worry. I recorded everything. I’ll send it over now.”

She had been prepared for this. She didn’t believe Dante to be so generous. But she wasn’t about to let go of the money once it was in her hands.

James let out a sigh of relief. He said, “Alright, if there’s anything like this again next time, I hope you’ll inform me in advance, otherwise we’ll be at a disadvantage.”

Sophia replied, “My apologies, I didn’t think it through.” Confident in her plan, she had overlooked James’s concerns. After hanging up, she clipped the recording and sent it over.

With the recording in hand, James acted swiftly. Backed by the Lynn family, Teresa had started fighting Dante over the family assets. James’s interference only added fuel to the fire, and the couple’s feud escalated.

Whatever negotiations took place between the couple, Sophia didn’t concern herself with the details. She’d already pocketed her compensation, and James signed the settlement agreement on her behalf.

Sophia wasn’t worried about not hearing back from Darnell yet. She sipped her coffee slowly, her gaze drifting out the window, though her thoughts had already wandered far away.

Suddenly, Sophia heard a familiar yet frustrated voice say, “Can I get a cappuccino? Extra sugar, please.”

Sophia glanced toward the counter and saw Yvonne slumped over it, looking completely drained.

The staff mentioned Sophia’s presence, and Yvonne perked up slightly. She turned her head in Sophia’s direction. “Sophia, you’re here too,” Yvonne said, forcing a smile as she walked over.

Sophia noticed Yvonne’s red–rimmed eyes and said flatly, “If you don’t feel like smiling, don’t bother.”

Yvonne froze. Meeting Sophia’s indifferent gaze, her lips quivered, and tears started streaming down her face. She muttered, “I’m sorry, Sophia. I didn’t mean to. I just…”

Sophia didn’t respond, simply handing Yvonne a tissue.

Taking the tissue, Yvonne wiped her tears. “Thanks, Sophia,” she murmured, her head hanging low as her shoulders slumped. She added, “I had a falling out with my best friend.”

Her tears fell uncontrollably, one after another. She continued, “I thought she was just upset and would get over it in a few days. But she meant it.

“I heard she got into a car accident, so I went to see her at the hospital. But she yelled at me. I don’t even know what I did wrong. Did six years of friendship mean nothing to her?”

Sophia pushed a cream puff toward Yvonne. “Here, eat this. It might cheer you up.”

Yvonne wiped her tears again and managed a weak smile. She said, “Thanks, Sophia. Sorry for dumping all this on you.”

Sophia replied, “It’s fine.” She had never cared much for friendships after so many regenerations. Watching Yvonne force a smile while drowning in her emotions, Sophia said calmly, “Why are you so upset?”

“She was my best friend,” Yvonne replied softly.

Sophia’s lips curled into a faint, mocking smile. She said, “That’s what you think. Maybe she never felt the same way.

Yvonne froze, her already fragile heart taking another hit. She murmured, “Sophia…”

Sophia continued, “Some people just aren’t meant to be your friends. I warned you about this before.”

Wonne recalled what Sophia had said during their first meeting. She looked at Sophia in shock.

Sophia added, “Your friend Ingrid caused the accident chasing Howard’s car. The girl with her, Giselle, died instantly.”

Yvonne’s eyes widened in shock. She wasn’t into celebrity gossip or entertainment news; all she knew was that Ingrid had been in a car accident. But she had no idea how it had happened until now.

Seeing her reaction, Sophia continued, “If she hadn’t cut ties with you, you’d have been the one in that car with her.”

Yvonne’s face turned pale as a thought struck her. Even her lips began to tremble. She said, “Then I would’ve been the one who died.”

Sophia replied, “Exactly.”

“But now it’s Giselle who died,” Yvonne said, covering her mouth as tears streamed down her face. “If Ingrid and I hadn’t fought, Giselle wouldn’t have died.”

Sophia was at a loss for words. She thought, ‘Seriously? Shouldn’t she be relieved she dodged a bullet? If someone had to die, wouldn’t it be better if it were someone else?

‘Yet, looking at Yvonne’s tear–streaked face, there isn’t a hint of relief, only guilt and sorrow.‘ Sophia’s patience wore thin. She said, “Yvonne, are you seriously wishing the person who died was you?”

With a sharp motion, Sophia snapped her laptop shut, startling Yvonne into sitting up straight with a hiccup.

Sophia said, “Neither you nor Giselle should’ve died. The one responsible for all of this is Ingrid. You did nothing wrong. Ingrid is at fault. You should be glad you cut ties with her. Giselle died this time; next time, it could’ve been you.”

Sophia slapped the table, cutting Yvonne off. She asked, “Why are you still stuck on this nonsense?”

To repair her image, Yvette began painting while Howard quietly blended colors for her nearby. They didn’t exchange a single word throughout the
