Reborn to Burn Them All novel Chapter 47

Chapter 47

Liam had recently recovered from a serious illness. He looked frail, with a thin frame, dressed in a suit and leaning on a cane. Yet, his spirits were surprisingly high.

When Liam saw Sophia, his face softened with the warmth and affection of an elder. He said, “Ah, so you’re the Chandler girl. You’re really something

Sophia greeted Liam politely, “Hello, Mr. Wilder. I’m Sophia.”

Liam nodded with a smile and waved Sophia closer, saying, “Come here, let me get a good look at you.”

Before Sophia could move, Jonathan gave her arm a gentle nudge, urging her forward.

Sophia stepped closer and stood in front of Liam.

Liam studied Sophia with a pleased expression and turned to Jonathan to say, “Jonathan, you’re truly blessed to have such a wonderful and promising daughter. Make sure you treat her well.”

Sophia froze for a moment, caught off guard by the unexpected praise.

Jonathan chuckled awkwardly and replied, “Mr. Wilder, don’t worry. I’ve neglected Sophia in the past, but I’ll make it up to her

Liam nodded approvingly and said, “She is a real talent and deserves to be nurtured properly.”

Liam then turned back to Sophia and continued, “Sophia, if anyone ever gives you trouble, just come to me. I’ll make sure they regret it.”

Sophia blinked with a sincere smile. Then she said, “Thank you, Mr. Wilder.”

As the day wore on, Liam seemed a bit tired from meeting so many guests. He reached for a small box beside him and handed it to Sophia, saying, “This is a gift for you. Open it when you get home.”

Both Sophia and Jonathan were taken aback by this unexpected gesture.

Seeing Sophia’s hesitation, Liam urged, “Go on, take it. You’re not supposed to refuse a gift from an elder.”

Sophia glanced at Liam. Then she lowered her gaze to his wrinkled hands. Finally, she reached out and accepted the box with both hands as she said, “Thank you, Mr. Wilder.”

Sophia stepped out of the house with the box in both hands. Lowering her eyes, she remained silent.

“Who knew Mr. Wilder had a soft spot for high–scorers?” Jonathan muttered to himself.

Sophia stayed quiet the entire way.

When they got home, Jonathan recounted their meeting with Liam to Heather.

Heather’s eyes immediately landed on the box in Sophia’s hands, and she blurted out, It’s such a shame Yvette wasn’t there.”

Sophia let out a bitter laugh. With sarcasm, she said, “Let me guess–if Yvette had been there, this would’ve magically become hers, right?

Heather’s gaze flickered uneasily, and she explained, “I didn’t say that.”

Sophia scoffed, her disdain evident in the sharp sound.

As the three of them stepped out, they passed by a lounge where three girls were sitting. The moment the girls spotted Sophia, their faces turned pale as if they’d seen a ghost. Without a second thought, they bolted out of the room.

Heather frowned, Clearly annoyed, she asked, “What’s wrong with those kids? Do we look that scary to them?

Jonathan stayed silent. His gaze was fixed on Sophia.

After the party ended, Sophia left the Wilder residence, still holding the box,

As Sophia got into the Ear, she paused for a moment, turning back to glance toward the third floor.

On the third floor, Liam, who had seemed frail earlier, now sat upright at a chessboard. His movements were steady and deliberate as he sipped tea and played chess with someone.

Liam was facing a young man seated in a wheelchair.

While playing chess, Liam spoke with a hint of concern, “That girl looks so sweet and innocent, but who would’ve thought she’s got such a fiery temper? Are you sure giving her what’s in the box won’t cause any trouble?”

The handsome young man, exuding an otherworldly calm, held a black chess piece between his tender, slender fingers. The stark contrast made the piece stand out, effortlessly drawing attention.

Placing the piece on the board, the man allowed a faint, enigmatic smile to curve his lips. He stated, “It’s just a piece of art.” His gentle and clear voice carried a touch of elegance.

Liam was silent for a moment before he broke into laughter.

Back at the Chandler residence, Sophia had been staring at the box for five minutes.

She couldn’t figure out why Liam had given her a gift.

In her previous life, Sophia hadn’t gone to the party–it was Yvette who went. However, Yvette hadn’t brought back any gifts.

Unable to make sense of it, Sophia decided to stop overthinking.

The moment Sophia opened the box, she shot up from her chair so abruptly that it toppled over with a loud crash.

Sophia’s brows furrowed tightly as her gaze locked onto the dagger inside the box. Its ruby inlay gleamed coldly, and the entire blade seemed to radiate a chilling, almost menacing aura.

Sophia thought, ‘Why is this dagger here? I think it’s…‘

Just as Sophia was desperately trying to piece her thoughts together, a loud, forceful knocking on the door shattered her concentration.
