Nolan observed George's tear-streaked face, which seemed to be brimming with anguish for his daughter. However, Nolan could easily discern that much of it was an act.
Still, the part about Audrey saving him was likely true.
Nolan sighed softly and asked, "So, it was really Audrey who saved me back then? And she paid a steep price for it? What kind of price?"
George didn't dare conceal anything. He quickly explained, "Burns. Severe burns. A large area of skin on Audrey's back was burned, leaving her deeply scarred. Over the years, she's become self-conscious about it. She's never worn backless clothing—rarely even dresses, and the scars still cause her pain from time to time.
"More importantly, Mr. Greene, the emotional pain she's endured has been far worse. She's a young woman who values her appearance, but this has left her devastated."
At this, George's tears began to flow again, as though his heart ached deeply for his daughter. He looked as though he wished he could take her pain upon himself.
Nolan could imagine the agony Audrey must have gone through, both from the burns and the emotional scars. He could even picture the searing pain she must have endured during the fire.
"Why didn't Audrey tell me about this?" Nolan asked, his tone calm but tinged with regret. "Over the years, she's had countless opportunities to share the truth, even just recently."
George hesitated for a moment before replying, "Mr. Greene, Audrey is kindhearted but also a little timid. She never wanted to use her good deed to gain anything in return. Especially after she fell in love with you, she didn't want to win your affection through something like this.
"And after you fell for Megan, she had even less reason to bring it up. Now, with the misunderstandings between you two, she has no intention of using her suffering to gain sympathy. In her eyes, saving you was something she willingly chose to do—not something to ask for repayment or gratitude."
Nolan nodded slowly. "That's true. Audrey has never been the type to do something for personal gain. She wouldn't use this to her advantage.
