The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 582

In a low voice, Vernon replied, "Alright, I'll call Mr. Norman for reinforcements since this matter concerns them as well, so they can't just wash their hands of it. But what about Harper? Where is she? Right now, she might be the only one who can turn the tide of this battle.

"Get her back here immediately! If she helps the family survive this crisis, I'll drop the marriage arrangement. From now on, she'll have full control over her own marriage."

Geoffrey's eyes lit up at those words, and he nodded decisively. "I'll contact Harper right away. She should be arriving soon, and if she hears that you're giving her the freedom to choose her own husband, I believe she'll help the family even if it costs her life."

The term "help the family" was the exact wording Geoffrey used. Clearly, there was significant discord between the Norberg family and Harper—one that likely wouldn't be easy to reconcile.

That was precisely why he had chosen the word "help"—neither an order nor an expectation.

Vernon's expression was one of displeasure, but he didn't say anything. Instead, he called Norman to request for reinforcements.

Two minutes later, the gray hue of his expression had faded, replaced with a faint flush of color—clearly, the response had satisfied him.

He turned to Geoffrey and asked, "Did you manage to contact Harper?"

With a darkened expression, Geoffrey shook his head. "The call went through, but she didn't answer."

Vernon immediately became furious. "That insolent brat! The family is facing a crisis, and she chooses now to throw a tantrum? Does she really think we will fall apart without her? When she gets back, I'll make sure to teach her a lesson!"
