The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 605

Nolan waved his hand dismissively, his gaze locking onto Harper.

"Harper, I'll spare your life for Pierce's sake. In fact, I'm giving you a chance to save your family. In total, there are 326 of you Norbergs in the entire Eastland. Excluding the infants and young children, I will give you the complete records of every single one of them and let you decide their fate.

"But I have one question for you—can you be fair and just? If you can, then only those who deserve to die will die, and the rest will be spared. At the very least, the infants and children will live. But if you can't—if there's even a shred of bias—then all of them will die, including the children.

"Do you dare to take this responsibility? Remember, this is your one and only chance to save some of them. I'm handing you the power of judgment. I'm letting you decide. Do you have what it takes?"

Harper never expected Nolan to say something like this. Even more shocking, he was giving her the power to decide the fate of her family.

She didn't want to accept it. But if she refused, everyone would die. So, she had no choice.

Harper took a deep breath and nodded. "I accept! Rest assured, I won't protect those deserving of death. But for those who should live, you are not allowed to kill them!"

Nolan gave a curt nod. "Alright, as you wish. Harper, I will let you see for yourself whether these people deserve to live or die. I'll make sure you witness firsthand that the darkness you know is merely the tip of the iceberg. But since you've agreed, I have a condition of my own. If you don't accept it, then my offer is off the table."

Hearing this, Harper fixed her gaze on Nolan and asked in a low voice, "What condition?"

Nolan smiled faintly, then pointed at Pierce. "I heard there's something complicated between you two—so much so that you've always wanted to draw your blade against him. Then, I'll give you the chance.

"Follow Pierce. Become his subordinate. Work for him and for me. That way, you'll always have the opportunity to challenge him, or even me, whenever you want revenge. And remember, you have no choice. You can only say yes."
