The Alpha turned his attention towards the three Omegas, who had shifted back into their human forms. They stood with their heads bowed and their hands clasped in front of them, submissive.
“Alpha Zero,” they murmured in unison when he got to his feet and approached them.
Zero was the Lycan King’s cousin and the Alpha of the Azure Pack. He was known all over the kingdom for his good looks and gentle disposition despite being one of the strongest Alphas in the kingdom.
“What’s going on here?” he asked, his voice steely as he regarded the three shewolves. They were forbidden from shifting or fighting in the royal palace without permission, and yet they had done both.
“She started it,” Claire replied. “She is new here and refused our advice on work, then she attacked me with a dagger. The others jumped in to save me.”
“I did not start it,” Lyra claimed through her clenched teeth. This Alpha had shown concern when he helped her get up earlier. Would he care about the truth or believe the three?
Alpha Zero stared at Claire for a few more moments, his eyes stern. Then, he switched his attention to the next shewolf, Sharon. “What advice did you offer?”
The shewolf was so shaken by the Alpha’s appearance that she could barely put her thoughts together, let alone string words to make a coherent sentence. “She…we…I don’t know–”
“You don’t know what advice you were offering?” Zero asked, raising his brow. He looked at the three of them, but neither dared look him in the eye. Finally, he turned to Lyra. “Tell me what happened.”
After Lyra narrated exactly what happened, Claire jumped in. “That’s not true. She is the one who poured the soup and then claimed that she could not clean it. Ever since she came to the palace, she has been acting all high and mighty and refusing to work like the rest of us. When I said I would report her to Thea, she attacked me.”
Zero stroked his jaw with his knuckles, looking thoughtful. “Is that so?”
“Yes, Alpha,” the three of them claimed simultaneously.
“Well then, since both sides have different versions of what happened, I suppose I’ll have to check the surveillance footage, right?” His lips stretched in a humourless smile. “You know the consequences of lying to me, so I’m guessing you would not do that.”
Claire and Sharon exchanged dread-filled glances. If they made the Alpha go as far as checking the security footage only to find out they lied…
As if they were a trio of robots controlled by the same controller, the three fell to their knees instantly. “We are sorry, Alpha Zero,” Claire spoke up for them. “It was a small fight among servants, we dare not bother you with it.”
“You don’t want to bother me, or you don’t want me to find out the truth?” Zero enquired.
“She was insulting us,” Sharon said, changing tune. “That’s why we got angry and decided to discipline her.”
“I would advise against telling me any more lies,” Zero warned. He snapped his fingers, and a couple of palace guards appeared. “These three servants shifted and fought on palace grounds, then lied to me. Take them to the dungeon.”
“Yes, Alpha Zero,” the guards replied and got to work.
“Thank you,” Lyra thanked Alpha Zero after the group was gone. He had turned out to be a true saviour, unlike someone she knew…
“Don’t mention it,” he told her. “I’m Alpha Zero of the Azure Pack. I haven’t seen you around here before.”
Lyra knew of the Azure Pack, it was tied to the royal family. Even though he was related to the Lycan King, he was nothing like him. He was gentle, fair, and just–qualities the Lycan King could do with.
“I’m new here,” she told him, holding back any more information about her arrival or background. “My name is Lyra.”
“You must be in pain, Lyra,” he told her, looking at her bleeding shoulder. “Come with me and we’ll treat your wounds.”
Zero led the way to his suite, which was in the main palace building. Zero had been staying at the palace for a while to help with some administrative matters and training programs.
A part of Lyra thought that she should have refused his offer, but it was hard to not bask in his gentleness. No one had treated her with so much concern and sincerity in ages, let alone someone more powerful than her.
