As Julian got ready in the training room, he could barely keep his anger in check. He could not even tell why he was so mad at seeing Lyra pressed up close to Zero. It was not like he did not already know the kind of female she was!
He knew his cousin was fond of taking care of weaker werewolves, so Zero would of course offer to help her. But he also knew that unless Zero had an interest in Lyra, he would not have let her into his suite.
He must be attracted to her. After all, Lyra was so good at pulling off the innocent victim look. Someone with Zero’s personality would definitely fall for it.
“Let’s do this,” he said to Zero, bouncing on his feet and getting his hands into a fighting stance.
Zero was thrilled that Julian had asked him for one-on-one combat. There were lots of fighting skills he could still learn from the Lycan King. Plus, he wanted to see how well he could hold up against the most powerful male in the kingdom. There was no better challenger.
“Bring it on,” Zero said, getting into position too.
There was no preamble. Julian rushed at him like it was a matter of life and death and he wanted to take Zero out. Zero’s quick footwork saved him from the first attempt. However, Julian recovered much too quickly and punched him right in the jaw.
Zero felt his jaw as he stepped backwards then regained his stance. “Damn, you hit hard.”
Damn right I do.
Zero realised very quickly that Julian meant business. His hits were fast and lethal, dealing as much damage as possible. There was something different from the other times they had sparred. This time, it seemed as if Julian wanted to kill him.
At one point, Julian came at him with a barrage of punches, forcing Zero to adopt a defensive pose and step back fast. But as he did, Julian hooked his foot around his and sent him to the floor on his back. Normally, Julian would step back and wait for him to get back up so they could go another round. So it was a surprise when Julian straddled him and wrapped his hand around his neck.
Zero’s eyes widened as he first saw Julian’s eyes turn red and then felt the pressure of sharp claws against his neck. What the heck? Julian was breathing heavily, his muscular body heaving.
“Dude, what the fuck is wrong with you?” Zero asked, reaching up to try and dislodge Julian’s hand from around his throat. Instead of releasing him, Julian tightened his grip. “Julian!” Zero yelled.
Julian blinked, the wild look in his eyes disappearing. Zero’s voice brought him back to his senses, and he quickly let his cousin go and got off him.
Zero coughed and touched his throat, where Julian had left bloody marks. “What’s going on with you?” he asked, pinning Julian with his gaze.
Julian fell back against a corner pillar, breathing heavily with his eyes shut.
“And what was that with Lyra?” Zero asked. “Why were you so harsh with a maid like her?” Even if Julian was the Lycan King, he was not known for going around abusing the servants. Lyra was so weak and delicate, so Zero had been surprised at how hostile Julian had been towards her.
Julian made a low grunt and looked at his cousin. “If you want someone to fuck so much, I can give you a few worthy recommendations. You don’t need to stoop so low.”
“You are wrong about her,” Zero told him. “She has a good character, and I think she is sexy, but she is not like what you are insinuating.”
I think she is sexy.
Julian grunted again. Of course, he had been right about guessing that Zero was attracted to Lyra. Even he could admit that she was attractive. But Zero had no idea how wrong he was about the good character part, unless he preferred females who had no qualms sleeping around.
“You are the one who knows nothing about her,” he told Zero. “She is a cheater who slept with others behind her former mate’s back, but she likes pretending otherwise. But since you’re such a sucker for sob stories, I’m not surprised that you easily fell for her act.”
Zero’s brows scrunched up in a frown. “How do you know so much about her?”
