Chapter 434
ALEXANDER
Convincing her wasn’t easy.
I knew it wouldn’t be.
Faye had never been the kind to just agree to something because it sounded like the only option. Even when the odds were stacked against her, she still needed to understand it–to weigh it, to decide for herself.
That was who she was.
And right now, that same strength was what made this harder.
Because I could see it in her eyes–the hesitation, the resistance, the part of her that didn’t want to even consider something like this.
I didn’t blame her.
I didn’t even like it myself.
But liking it didn’t matter.
What mattered was that we were running out of time.
I stood in front of her, my gaze steady, even though there was a part of me that wanted to look away. Not because I was unsure–but because I knew exactly what I was asking her to do.
To trust this.
To trust us.
To step into something we couldn’t fully control.
“Faye,” I said quietly, my voice firm but not harsh. “Look at me.”
She didn’t respond immediately.
For a second, she just stood there, her arms folded slightly like she was holding herself together, her thoughts clearly running faster than she could sort through them.
Then slowly… she looked up.
Her eyes met mine.

And there it was again–that fire, even through everything else.
Fear was there too. I could see it, I wasn’t blind to it.
But it hadn’t taken over.
Not completely.
“Talk to me,” I added, softer this time.
She let out a breath, shaking her head slightly.
“This doesn’t feel right, Alexander.”
I nodded once.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t,” she said, her voice tightening just a little. “You’re asking me to just… stand there and trust that this works. That everything will just fall into place because we want it to.”
“I’m not asking you to trust the situation,” I replied immediately. “I’m asking you to trust me.”
That made her pause.
Her gaze held mine longer this time, like she was searching for something–something solid enough to hold on to.
“You don’t even know if this will work,” she said after a moment, quieter now.
“No,” I admitted.
There was no point pretending.
No point dressing it up.
“But I know doing nothing isn’t an option,” I continued. “And I know that standing here arguing about it won’t change anything either.”
She looked away briefly, her jaw tightening.
I took a step closer–not too much, just enough.
“Faye… we don’t have the luxury of perfect choices right now,” I said. “We have one chance. Maybe more, if we’re lucky. But this–this is something. It’s a move. It’s a way to take control of something that’s already trying to take control of you.”
Her fingers curled slightly at her sides.

I noticed that.
I was paying attention to everything now.
“I don’t like it either,” I added, quieter. “You think I do?”
That got her attention again.
Her eyes snapped back to mine.

“You think I’m standing here comfortable with this?” I went on. “You think I’m okay with the idea of putting you through something like this without knowing exactly how it ends?”
She didn’t answer.
Didn’t interrupt.
So I kept going.
“I’m not,” I said simply. “But I’m not going to stand here and watch you get pulled into something we didn’t even try to fight.”
The room felt still around us.
Heavy.
Even my own words sat in the air.
I let a moment pass before I spoke again.
“You said it yourself,” I continued. “You don’t want to just sit back and let this happen. You want to face it. You want to deal with it head–on.”
Her expression shifted slightly at that.
Because she knew it was true.
“That’s what this is,” I said. “Facing it.”
She exhaled slowly, her shoulders dropping just a fraction.
I watched her carefully, giving her the space to think, to decide.
Because, in the end, it had to be her choice.
Not mine.
Not my mother’s.

Hers.
A few seconds passed.
Then a few more.
And then-
“…If this goes wrong…” she started, her voice quieter now.
“It won’t,” I cut in.
She gave me a look.
One of those looks that said she knew exactly what I was doing.
“Don’t,” she said. “Don’t give me that.”
I almost smirked.
Almost.
But this wasn’t the moment for that.
“Fine,” I said instead. “If it goes wrong–we deal with it.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It’s the only one we have,” I said.
She stared at me for a long second.
Then another.
And then…
“… You’re not going to back down from this, are you?” she asked.
“No.”
That answer came easy.
She huffed out a quiet breath, shaking her head slightly.
“Of course you’re not.”
A small silence followed.

“…Alright.”
The word was soft.
I held her gaze, making sure I heard it right.
“You’re sure?” I asked.
She nodded once.
“I’m not saying I like it,” she added. “But I get it.”
That was enough.
More than enough.
I gave a small nod in return.
“Alright,” I said quietly.
I didn’t reach for her.
Didn’t push anything further.
Because I knew what that decision had cost her.
And I wasn’t about to take that lightly.
Behind us, Helen finally spoke.
“Then we don’t have time to waste.”
Faye turned slightly toward her, her expression still serious but steadier now.
I stayed where I was, listening.
“I’ll need to gather what’s required,” my mother continued. “Some of it isn’t readily available here, so I’ll have to step out.”
I frowned slightly at that but didn’t interrupt.
“There’s no room for delay,” she added. “This has to be done today.”
My gaze shifted briefly to Faye, just to see how she took it.
She didn’t react.
Helen’s eyes moved between the both of us.

“You’ll both need to be ready,” she said.
