"Absolutely not!" Nelly instantly vetoed Holden's suggestion.
Iris couldn't openly defend the idea. Plotting physical harm exposed a dark, ruthless side of someone's character, and she desperately wanted to maintain the illusion that she and Holden were completely innocent and upstanding citizens.
She looked at Holden, shooting him a helpless, pleading glance, silently begging him to walk back his "inappropriate" comment.
Holden, never one to disappoint, smoothly pivoted. "I would break my own moral code if it meant protecting Iris."
While the room was still trying to process that, Holden delivered a masterful, deeply earnest explanation.
"Her brother married Yvonne, which makes the Sutton family Iris's family. Iris has a heart of gold. She deeply loves all of you. As her fiancé, my love extends to everything she loves. Her family is my family. Dr. Shultz has caused this household unnecessary stress, and I simply felt it was my duty to eliminate that burden for my loved ones."
His voice was steady, slow, and completely unwavering. He sounded like the ultimate protector.
The room erupted into applause. They had never seen such a perfect man. He loved his woman, he loved his woman's nieces and nephews, he loved her maiden family, and he even loved the family of her brother's father-in-law! It was unprecedented. You couldn't find a man like this anywhere else in the country.
Nelly smiled so hard her wrinkles doubled, pulling Iris close and affectionately tapping her nose. "My precious girl, you have found yourself an absolute paragon of a man."
Thank goodness she had made it just in time.
Now she could finally relax. If Nelly wanted to fire Winifred, so be it. Paige didn't need her anymore anyway. Once Dr. Adams arrived, he could take over her prenatal care. Everyone said Dr. Adams was Winifred's boss, which meant his skills were infinitely superior. He was a master in every field, and he even formulated custom beauty creams!
He could monitor her pregnancy and keep her skin flawless. After delivering the heir, she wouldn't have a single stretch mark. She could still rock a tiny string bikini, her face spotless and glowing. She'd remain a stunning, perfect influencer with a killer body, keeping her husband Jared completely obsessed with her.
Paige stood up. Winifred was probably going to arrive soon, and she wanted to make herself scarce. If Nelly fired Winifred today and the doctor refused to leave, Winifred might try to use Paige's successful pregnancy as leverage to prove her worth. If Paige got dragged into that mess, she'd be blamed for standing in the way of Winifred's termination.
