That would put a massive target on her back. Everyone would turn against her. Nelly had been chronically ill for years, which made her incredibly moody and terrifying when crossed.
Holding her belly, Paige excused herself. "I'm feeling a bit tired. I'm going to rest in my room."
As soon as she was gone, the other women immediately started gossiping.
"Why is she acting so delicate? Like she's carrying a lump of solid gold."
"I can't stand her arrogance. She acts like none of us have ever been pregnant before."
"She reeked of herbal medicine for six straight months just to get knocked up, and now she's acting like she's royalty."
The wife of the fifth brother's eldest son watched Paige walk away. "Well, you have to admit, if she managed to get pregnant, Dr. Shultz's remedies definitely work."
Her sister-in-law nodded. "I actually wanted to ask Dr. Shultz for some supplements. Hugh really wants a daughter."
The others quickly shushed her.
"Just wait for Dr. Adams."
"He'll be here soon."
The two women exchanged a glance and nodded. True. It wasn't the time to stir the pot. Nelly ruled the household with an iron fist. She had already snapped at Paige today for defending Winifred, and nobody knew if she was still in a foul mood. Better to just wait for the superior Dr. Adams. Maybe his treatments could guarantee twin girls—a double blessing for her husband.
So, she asked the cab driver to take the long way around. The medication Nelly demanded was already in her medical bag—she had two bottles ready to go.
The autumn rain continued to fall, the wind plastering yellow ginkgo leaves against the wet windows of the cab. Winifred smoothed down her skirt to cover her legs. It was getting chilly.
Her phone buzzed in her lap.
It was Quentin.
Calling her during work hours? That was a first.
