Holden's jaw clenched. "Do not test my limits!"
Declan immediately spun around, grabbed Winifred—who was quietly focused on her food—and pulled her up to showcase her to Holden.
"This is what beauty looks like. Open your eyes. Being blind just makes you look stupid."
Dealing with the erratic Declan was a nightmare. He was impossible to reason with. Their pride had already taken a hit; the smartest move now was to find a graceful exit and de-escalate.
Iris looked at Winifred, shooting her a pointed, suggestive look. Jordyn was just a toddler; it was natural for her to want a treat when someone else was eating. All Winifred had to do was grab a piece of cake, give it to Jordyn, apologize, say a few sweet things to cheer the kid up, and this whole mess would blow over.
Winifred had to know that causing a scene in the Sutton household wouldn't end well for her. She was the only true outsider here. If it came down to a fight, the Sutton family would obviously side with Iris and Holden.
Receiving Iris's silent command, Winifred looked at her own hand—the one Declan had pulled into the air—still holding a fork with a piece of warm, sugary cake on it.
Maintaining eye contact with Iris, Winifred popped the cake directly into her own mouth.
*Gulp.*
Winifred shifted her gaze and saw Jordyn staring at her, tears streaming down her face, her little mouth watering.
Almost simultaneously, Declan tugged Winifred's wrist, pulling her back down onto the sofa. "Keep eating."
Winifred looked at Iris's face, which had turned as dark as thunder. She looked at Jordyn's quivering lips, and then at the deep, dark intensity in Holden's eyes.
The irony was exquisite. If Holden and Iris had known the tables would turn this drastically, would they still have ruined her cake and stolen her coffee?
"I threw it!" Declan announced, a cigarette dangling from his lips. "What about it?"
Perfect. He just handed her the opening. Iris's lips curled into a subtle smirk.
"Mrs. Sutton, please don't be mad at Declan. Dr. Shultz and I had a misunderstanding, and he was just trying to mediate. But Dr. Shultz was..."
She left the sentence hanging, ensuring the blame landed squarely on Winifred.
It was always Winifred's fault. Once again, she was the one ruining everything.
Iris pressed her advantage. "Mrs. Sutton, I think you should just let Dr. Shultz go tonight. She... honestly, if her presence here is causing conflict and making everyone unhappy, we just need to cut ties. I'm sorry, I just care so much about our family's harmony that I had to speak up..."
