Thanks to Iris's manipulation, Winifred realized she was probably done for.
In Iris's mind, Winifred was completely isolated. This part-time job at the Suttons was her *only* lifeline right now. If Nelly went along with Iris and fired her, she would be jobless, helpless, and left with nowhere to go—exactly the miserable fate Iris and Holden wanted for her.
Suddenly, Declan pushed his way forward, stepping firmly in front of Winifred and blocking Nelly's hostile glare.
"What are you doing?" Nelly asked, startled.
"If you don't want the ghosts of the people you killed coming back to haunt you, try being a decent human being for once!" Declan snarled. "Look at the facts before you start making decisions."
Nelly stumbled backward.
"Mrs. Sutton!" The maids quickly caught her.
Her wretched son! He was using his dead lover and child to torture his own mother again. It had been six years, and he still wouldn't let it go.
But to be fair, the tragedy wasn't entirely Nelly's fault.
The girl had been from a poor, rural background. Her mother worked as a maid in Kingsbridge, and her father was a dock worker. Her family was completely destitute.
Yet, Declan used to drive his flashy sports cars right onto the campus of the Kingsbridge Film Academy, parading the girl around for everyone to see. The rumor that the prestigious Sutton heir was dating a dock worker's daughter spread like wildfire, utterly humiliating Nelly.
Nelly had confronted the girl, analyzing the situation from every angle and offering her a massive sum of money to leave Declan. They simply weren't from the same world.
But the girl refused. She ignored the warnings, openly moved in with Declan, got pregnant, and proudly paraded her growing belly around town.
No mother in Nelly's position could tolerate that.
At the time, there was a wealthy heiress who was deeply infatuated with Declan. Through Nelly's machinations, the heiress ended up in Declan's bed.
That night happened to be the pregnant girl's birthday. Instead of Declan arriving to celebrate her first birthday as a soon-to-be mother, she received a photo of him sleeping with another woman.
"I want Dr. Shultz."
*What?*
It was a shocking statement, but no one took it seriously. Everyone knew Declan was unhinged.
Declan pointed his cigarette at the ruined afternoon tea that Iris had been eating. "Look at that. That was prepared for three people, right?"
The maid nodded. "Yes, sir."
Declan pointed at Holden and Iris. "These two hogs devoured the whole thing and ruined whatever was left. So you tell me—who's causing the conflict here?"
Iris immediately ducked her head, unable to withstand the burning gaze of everyone in the room.
The truth was, before they started eating, she had sensed that Holden wanted to wait for Winifred. Winifred had gone to the restroom, and Holden was sitting far away on the rocking chair. It was Iris who had insisted he join her, and Holden, who always catered to her every whim, had finally picked up a fork and started destroying the cake.
