Later, when Iris wanted another drink, Holden had purposefully taken Winifred's coffee and given it to her out of spite toward his ex-wife.
Iris had orchestrated the entire situation. She was the root of the conflict.
She wanted to defend Holden, to stop everyone from looking at him differently and ruining his image as the perfect, devoted man.
But... Nelly's anger was terrifying.
Iris's lips trembled as she tried to take the fall. "Mrs. Sutton... please don't blame Holden. I was just so hungry. I didn't wait for Winifred and started eating on my own."
Nelly looked at the mangled mess of cake on the bed. "Do you completely abandon basic table manners when you're in private?"
"I..." Iris twisted her fingers nervously.
Holden immediately stepped in front of her, shielding her. "I told Iris to go ahead. She spent the entire morning caring for my injuries and skipped lunch. She was starving, and I didn't want it to affect her health."
Declan instantly weaponized the excuse. "She 'skipped lunch,' but Dr. Shultz hasn't eaten a *single bite* all day! Dr. Shultz is even hungrier! You let Iris ruin Dr. Shultz's food, leaving her with nothing. Tell me, how do you think that affects Dr. Shultz's health?"
"That's completely different!" Holden snapped.
"They're both women. One ate, the other didn't. Choose your next words carefully," Declan warned.
Holden's voice was cold and resolute. "Iris grew up sheltered. She's delicate and can't handle hardship. Dr. Shultz is used to roughing it; she has the constitution of an ox. Skipping one meal isn't going to hurt her."
"Are you out of your damn mind?!" Declan threw his cigarette down and lunged at Holden.
Nelly turned her gaze to Winifred, her eyes shining. She looked at her with the exact same reverence and gratitude as the day Winifred had saved Declan's life.
Objectively speaking, aside from making Iris a bit uncomfortable, Winifred was flawless. She was highly skilled, beautiful, and had a great temperament. If leaving Declan in her care could cure his madness, Nelly would die a happy woman.
"Mrs. Sutton!" Iris panicked, frantically tugging at Nelly's sleeve, desperate to drag her back to reality.
She had spent so much time and effort setting this up. She was *this* close to destroying Winifred. Nelly couldn't ruin her and Holden's plan now!
Iris's face contorted with anxiety, but Nelly completely ignored her, forcefully pulling Iris over to Winifred.
"Dr. Shultz is going to be your new Aunt Winifred," Nelly declared warmly. "Now, apologize to your aunt..."
