Winifred placed the invitation carefully into her handbag.
"Bring it on, Holden!"
"Haha! What did you say?"
Winifred glared at him. "My original plan was to let go of the past and not blame you. I was prepared to bear all the pain and torment alone. But you... you want to drag me back into the hell I once lived in. When I return to Seaport City, I will make everyone who plotted against me... pay in blood!"
"Look at you, all grown up, Winifred," Holden smiled earnestly.
"Don't laugh. Hurry back and think of a strategy. Think long and hard about how to cover for your precious Iris and the people who hurt me. This time, I won't let any of you off the hook!"
She shoved Holden's shoulder out of the way, creating a path, and briskly walked past him.
Holden chuckled behind her.
"Good, good, good! You've finally grown a spine. It's a cause for celebration."
"But, Winifred, you better brace yourself."
"My feelings for Iris run deeper than you can imagine. Over the past three years, I've elevated her into a massive star loved by everyone. Even you, hiding in the obscure corners of Kingsbridge, were drawn out by her starlight."
"Next, I'm going to start a company for Iris and push her right to the top, as a major CEO."
"You think you've awakened and are ready to do something big? Let me remind you to eat well, sleep well, and save up your strength. Because Iris will always be right above you, keeping you pinned down at all times."
The autumn wind picked up again.
Yellow leaves drifted down.
The desolate chill pierced straight to the bone.
Just as she got into her ride-share, Celeste's call came in.
Her urgent, furious voice echoed through the phone:
"Winifred, that damn Quentin Adams! He brought people to the Kaleidoscope restaurant too, and his private room is right next to ours. The kids will see them as soon as they look up. Should we change our seats!?"
Impossible!
His feelings for her were a mix of love and hate. He was terrified of losing her, yet he wanted to punish her out of spite because he considered her "tainted."
For years, he had held it all in—acting coldly, indulging himself, "punishing" her while simultaneously torturing himself.
If she really showed her fangs, Quentin would definitely be intimidated.
Winifred was confident she could make Quentin change his seats.
He was too scared to answer the phone.
She figured she would just deal with it when she got there. If he refused to move, she would flip their table and drive them out herself!
She absolutely would not let her two children suffer any more grievances. Last week's family birthday dinner had already broken their hearts.
While she was lost in thought, her phone rang again.
It was Leland calling.
