Shelly was entirely convinced that her man was simply that successful and charismatic, and that Mrs. Channing had come purely out of respect for him to celebrate her birthday.
She pulled the gift box open.
Wow!
It was stunning.
Inside the main box were three smaller, exquisite velvet cases. She opened the square one first. Resting on a bed of silk was a breathtaking jade bracelet, its vibrant emerald green swirling perfectly with milky white accents. It glowed under the lights—undeniably premium, top-tier jade. Easily worth a fortune.
Quentin, nursing his wine, caught a glimpse and panicked. "Don't touch that!!"
Ever since Mrs. Channing walked over to Seth's table, he had realized the horrifying truth—the gift was never meant for Shelly.
But Shelly, busy fawning over the jewelry, completely ignored him. Quentin usually spoiled her, letting her get away with anything. She was used to doing whatever she wanted.
Since the bracelet was obviously for an adult, she set it aside and opened the two rectangular boxes.
"Wow! I love these!" Larissa gasped, crowding in.
Inside were two beautifully carved jade pendants strung on delicate red cords, perfectly sized for children. They matched the bracelet, crafted from the same flawless stone. Larissa picked one up, flipping it over to see the characters for 'Peace and Protection' etched into the back.
"Are these protective amulets?" she asked.
Shelly had never owned jewelry this expensive, so she just guessed. "Mrs. Channing was very thoughtful. She bought these to wish you both safety, health, and a smooth life."
Eager to repay Shelly's kindness, the two sisters picked up the box holding the jade bracelet. Larissa held it steady while Demi pulled the bracelet out. They were determined to help their favorite aunt put it on.
"Ah! It's not going in!" Demi strained, her little face turning red from the effort.
Larissa frowned. Mrs. Channing really messed up the sizing. This beautiful bracelet having a flaw would ruin Shelly's perfect birthday surprise. They couldn't let that happen.
"Let me try," Larissa said, taking over. "I'm stronger."
Quentin let out a heavy, exhausted sigh. "Stop messing with that! Have some decency and put it away!"
Shelly shot him a glare. "Can you stop being such a buzzkill? The kids are just trying to be sweet. You should encourage them."
