Claire had just undergone a C-section yesterday, and today, her husband was forcing her to discharge against medical advice.
The nurses were frantic. "You have to talk some sense into your son!" a nurse loudly warned Martha. "Your daughter-in-law had a complicated delivery. She cannot leave right now."
Martha's mouth twitched, looking thoroughly caught in the middle.
"Ethan," she tried, her tone tentative. "Maybe... we should stay a couple more days?"
Ethan Seward shot his mother a lethal glare.
Muttering under his breath, he forcefully shoved Claire’s foot into her shoe.
Winifred stretched her neck to see what was going on.
An assertive older woman standing next to Martha couldn't hold back. "You're old enough to know how hard childbirth is. Your son is being completely unreasonable, and you're just going to stand there and watch? Are you that terrified of upsetting him?"
Martha's eyes welled with tears. "My hands are tied. I just... I can't do anything."
The ward was filled with overlapping voices.
People were loudly condemning Ethan for his toxic chauvinism, criticizing Martha for coddling her son and failing as a mother-in-law, and pitying Claire for marrying into such a family.
The whispers were harsh and unapologetic.
Standing to the side, Faye Seward bit her lip, her young face burning bright red.
She gently tugged at Ethan’s shirt. "Ethan, she's in too much pain. Let's just stay two more days. When she's feeling a bit better, we can go..."
Before she could even finish, Ethan's eyes bulged with rage. "Are you stupid? If you don't know what you're talking about, shut your mouth!"
Desperate to leave, he tried hauling Claire out of bed a few times.
But Claire couldn't sit up properly. She just gasped and cried out in agony.
Ethan was losing his temper. Claire wasn't cooperating, her cries of pain were drawing a crowd, and he felt humiliated. He was seething.
Scolded so viciously in public, Faye covered her mouth, burst into tears, and ran.
Winifred nodded sympathetically. "It really is. The medical bills pile up, you have to be meticulously careful, and the emotional toll is exhausting. It's draining."
Fresh tears rolled down Faye's cheeks. "I slept on a chair in the hallway last night and woke up freezing. But Ethan still..."
Still yelled at her. Still cursed at her.
Winifred offered a comforting smile. "You're still young. The adults' problems aren't yours to carry. You should just focus on your studies. As for taking care of your sister-in-law, maybe your dad could come help? If your parents did it together, they’d have more experience."
Finally, the conversation landed on Arthur.
Winifred didn't blink, her eyes fixed intently on Faye.
Three years ago, Madeleine had executed her scheme flawlessly, leaving absolutely zero evidence behind.
Last night, after getting Jasmine admitted, Winifred had used a bathroom break to discreetly ask Heather a few questions. Heather had no idea who Arthur Seward was. Furthermore, Heather casually mentioned that all the current staff at the Lockwood Mansion had roughly the same seniority as her.
Which meant that after Madeleine framed Winifred three years ago, she had systematically replaced every single employee in the house.
