Madeleine had cancer.
Winifred hadn't had the chance to tell Leland about it yet.
On the ride back to the hotel, Winifred asked, "Does Madeleine's condition ruin your plan?"
She assumed that since Leland had managed to get her out, he must have pulled major strings and set up a meticulous strategy. Holden's sudden revelation had caught them off guard.
Leland had asked his assistant for a thermos as soon as they got into the car. He poured a cup of warm water and brought it to Winifred's lips. "Drink some water after the IV."
Winifred took a sip.
His gentle voice drifted down from above her. "Don't worry. If the plan is disrupted, I'll just make a new one. There's always a way to make the wicked pay."
The warm water slid down her throat, spreading a comforting heat through her chest. Winifred smiled.
Leland rested his large hand on her head, speaking to her like she was a kid. "Happy?"
"Yeah," she nodded.
"What's the good news? Share it so I can be happy too."
"Leland, you're amazing," Winifred said, turning to look at him.
The man smiled back at her. His flawless face and gentle eyes radiated a noble elegance mixed with an undeniable warmth that made her heart skip a beat.
"Are you complimenting me?"
Winifred felt a rush of heat and quickly turned her gaze back out the window.
"The way you handle things is completely different from how you treat people."
Leland leaned in, clearly intrigued. "How so? Elaborate. I like hearing you talk about me."
"You act like a cheerful, easygoing guy, but when it comes to business, you're as ruthless and precise as a seasoned mastermind."
Leland chuckled. "Oh. So I'm young, but also an old soul?"
"Not exactly." Winifred rubbed her forehead, struggling to find the right words.
Because he had been staring at his phone, desperate for any news about her, he had tapped 'Download and Save' the second the messages appeared.
"Right after I saved them, the chat showed the messages had been unsent," Leland explained. "Thank God I saved the evidence in time. That's the only reason you got out so fast."
Winifred was stunned.
She immediately put down her fork, reached for her phone on the nightstand, and opened the app.
He was right. The chat log from yesterday showed:
*You unsent a message.*
*You unsent a message.*
That was impossible.
Her phone had been confiscated the moment she was arrested.
