Winifred didn’t hesitate for a second. She made her stance absolutely clear, "I don't want either of you."
Leland stood frozen before her for several long seconds.
Suddenly, he turned on his heel, leaped down the stone steps, and walked away.
The path ahead of him led down the mountain. It was well-paved and easy to navigate, yet his steps were agonizingly slow.
His retreating figure remained fixed in her line of sight.
Right then, a voice called out from the direction of the back mountain.
"Holden! Holden... where are you?"
It was Iris.
Holden glanced over his shoulder, his expression shifting slightly. Just as he opened his mouth to reply, Iris emerged from behind a patch of withered tall grass.
Her wide eyes darted around like an alert deer in the wilderness, sensitive and paranoid.
Before anyone could react, she shrieked.
"Holden, you're still with her?!"
She broke into a run. She was wearing a white bathrobe thrown loosely over a bikini and was still in her spa slippers. She stumbled over the uneven ground, swaying precariously as if she might tip over into the weeds at any second.
"Slow down."
Holden jogged past Winifred to catch her.
His long legs kicked aside the dead brush spilling onto the path, trampling down the tall stalks to carve out a smooth, clear path for Iris.
Winifred watched the scene unfold with total apathy.
She had already mentally prepared herself for this. She had known from the start that his sudden graveyard stunt was fueled by an ulterior motive.
Everything he did hid a horrifying agenda.
Now, his master plan was stepping into the light. It was beginning.
He and his precious Iris were launching their newest crusade to ruin her.
Clutching her robe, Iris dashed forward, her matcha-colored waves blowing in the wind. The sunlight caught the dye in her hair, flashing red and gold as she scrambled toward Winifred, looking fiercely beautiful and deeply enraged.
She glared at Winifred, gnashing her teeth as though she wanted to rip her to shreds.
Holden arrived a second later. Seeing him, Iris slightly reined in her hostile expression, forcing a touch of softness onto her heavy makeup as she scanned the area.
Iris immediately whipped her head around, scanning their surroundings.
After checking the entire perimeter, there was no sign of Leland.
"Where is he?"
"He left," Holden replied.
Iris’s gaze landed back on Winifred. Leland had been so utterly devoted to her, treating her like absolute royalty. And yet he just walked off alone, abandoning her here? This... meant something had happened.
Holden promptly delivered the good news. "I drove a wedge between them."
A wicked, triumphant smile spread across his handsome face.
The same smug joy mirrored itself on Iris's features. Combined with her cruel smirk, it painted a picture of absolute, venomous victory.
"So Leland dumped her?"
"Exactly," he replied.
Iris tilted her chin up, casting a sidelong, condescending glare at Winifred. "Ha! What did I tell you? Karma never misses. You got exactly what you deserved!"
