"Hahaha! Why didn't she just name the puppy Annie? Being pretty like her wouldn't be a bad thing!"
"You're terrible, Winifred! Who makes fun of their own daughter like that?" Celeste playfully swatted her arm. "But seriously, when Annie puts on her serious face, she looks exactly like Holden. When she grows up, she'll have your dimples but his striking bone structure. She's going to be gorgeous."
Celeste sighed. It was such a shame. Fate was incredibly cruel.
Winifred poured herself some tea. "Let's drop it. My kids have nothing to do with him."
"Well, the trip back was worth it," Celeste reasoned. "The Lockwoods are imploding. People are dead, in jail, and his parents are getting divorced. Madeleine's been exiled, which means she'll probably try to contact Arthur Seward. Eventually, she'll slip up, and we'll catch her."
"I don't want Madeleine destroyed too quickly," Winifred said coolly. "As long as she's around, Iris will get impatient..."
*Ring...*
Her phone shattered the quiet.
"Who is it?" Celeste asked, peeling another strip of paper off her face and grabbing a braised snack.
"Quentin Adams."
"Answer it," Celeste huffed. "While you were gone, he called every day asking about the kids. Sounds like he's actually regretting what he did."
"Hello, Quentin," Winifred answered, kicking off her slippers and tucking her legs into the sofa.
Celeste tossed her a floral fleece blanket, and Winifred draped it over her knees.
"Winifred!" Quentin's voice was practically vibrating with excitement.
The thrill of finally reaching her after days of longing was unmistakable.
"What is it?"
"Um... are you back from Seaport City?"
Winifred paused, considering how to respond.
She hadn't told him she was going. Moreover, Quentin still didn't know she had signed a two-year contract with Nelly Sutton and had traveled as her employee.
