At her question, Holden's face softened into a picture of innocent romance. "Of course I do. You know that."
Iris probed further. "I don't mean Jordyn. I mean... do you want children of your own?"
This was the ultimate test. If he desperately wanted kids, it meant he had a deep attachment to his own flesh and blood. If that were true, even if he despised Winifred, he might still value the twins she had given birth to. Since they were his offspring, he would have the final say. He could easily separate the children from their mother, treating Winifred as nothing more than a surrogate, and bring his kids home to raise himself.
Iris bit her lip, her mind racing.
Could she accept Winifred's children living in their marital home, sitting at her dining table? They would be massive burdens. Reminders of another woman stealing her man's attention. She hated the idea.
Seth and Annelise were absolutely infuriating. Just thinking about Annelise's flawless, doll-like face made Iris want to punch something. That little girl had hoarded all the good genes, making Iris's own niece, Jordyn Morgan, look like a grubby little troll in comparison.
And Seth was a nightmare—a scheming little genius. If those two were brought back to the Lockwood family, Seth would undoubtedly dazzle everyone with his intellect and become Holden's pride and joy. Annelise would coo "Daddy, Daddy," and Holden would dote on her endlessly. Those two brats would steal his heart.
The love that was supposed to belong exclusively to her would be divided.
Iris's fists clenched under the blankets.
Just then, Holden smiled faintly. "Right now, I can't even properly protect the most important person in my life. How could I possibly think about having kids?"
