After the formal welcoming ceremony, the Lockwood family hosted a lavish celebration banquet at the Family Crest Ballroom.

The adults mingled, drank, and laughed, enjoying the lively atmosphere.

Annie and Seth, having eaten their fill, were strapped into their high chairs, watching the live entertainment on stage. But after a while, Annie started rubbing her eyes, letting out a soft, bored sigh.

"Mommy, I can't sit still anymore," she whined.

Winifred quickly set down her wine glass and turned her attention to her daughter. "Do you want Mommy to hold you?"

Annie pointed toward the exit. "Can we go outside and play with Star?"

"Alright." Winifred unbuckled the twins and lifted them down.

Fletcher, who had been standing attentively behind Leland, immediately stepped forward. Taking one child by each hand, he escorted them out of the ballroom.

Just outside the Family Crest Ballroom was a sprawling courtyard connecting the various private dining halls. In the center sat an elaborate faux mountain, complete with a miniature stone bridge, cascading waterfalls, and ancient yew trees. Beneath the mountain was a clear, cool pond teeming with massive, vibrantly colored koi fish.

Annie and Seth retrieved their newly adopted puppy from the security detail and stood by the edge of the pond.

Fletcher handed Seth a small bag of fish food.

Seth took a handful and tossed it into the water.

The koi swarmed instantly, piling over each other to snap up the pellets. Their big, round heads bumped together as their mouths broke the surface, making silly, splashing sounds.

"They're so cute! Look at the big fishies!" Annie bounced on her toes.

"What's so great about that?!" a bossy, shrill voice suddenly interrupted.

Annie turned her head.

Jordyn Morgan was leaning against the railing a few yards away, her round face flushed with anger as she glared at them.

Annie simply turned back to watch the koi.

It was obvious Jordyn was mad because the fish she had been watching had swum over to their side of the pond. But so what?

Just moments earlier, she had asked her nanny to get some fish food. The nanny had asked the staff, but they were told it was against policy to let guests feed the koi.

It was infuriating. If she wasn't allowed to feed the fish, why were Seth and Annie allowed to?

Furious, Jordyn was determined to act like a bully.

But today, Annie wasn't afraid of her. She tilted her chin up and fired back.

"If you tell your dad to kick us out, I'll tell my daddy, and he'll kick you out!"

Jordyn scoffed. "Liar!"

She raised her voice so everyone around could hear. "You guys don't even have a dad!"

She was very confident about this. When they were in kindergarten, she had never once seen their father drop them off. Before Holden had them expelled, the teacher had announced a parent-child sports day. Seth and Annie had just lowered their heads in silence.
