"Why bother?" Owen scoffed. "She'll think I'm giving her hope and she'll come crawling back to harass me."

Beatrice agreed. "Holden, you don't know our family history. You can't show that woman pity. She stalked and clung to Owen for years, we couldn't shake her off. If you go out there acting nice, I guarantee she'll use it as an excuse to beg for him back. She literally can't survive without my son."

"It's dark, freezing, and snowing," Holden replied flatly. "Hugo is seven years old, carrying a sister who weighs more than him. If they fall and get hurt, they’ll come right back to you, and it’ll be another headache."

That made sense.

Owen clicked his tongue, rolling his jaw.

"Fine, go."

But he had one last instruction. "Don't say a single word about me. I am giving her zero chances. Do not let her harbor any fantasies."

"Understood," Holden nodded.
