Dr. Lewis quickly turned his head back, his laughter booming down the hall.
"Ah! Mr. Lockwood, yes, yes, of course... We'll meet tomorrow, absolutely. Haha! You really do dote on your wife. Your devotion to her is plain for everyone to see!"
The words struck Winifred like a physical blow.
The surgical consent form explicitly stated the risks of the operation. If a patient died on the table, the lead surgeon could easily find a medical excuse to cover it up. It would be murder without a trace.
The thought of her unconscious little girl at the mercy of this man made her blood run cold.
Just then, her phone buzzed. She answered it with trembling hands, and Leland Lockwood's steady, powerful voice filled her ear.
"Winifred, I've been trying to reach you. I just spoke with Declan. I know what's happening with the kids."
"Don't be afraid," he continued smoothly. "I've already contacted the head of the national medical board. Someone is going to meet you right now. You'll be allowed to accompany Annie straight into the operating room."
A rush of warmth flooded her heart, breathing life back into her terrified soul.
"Leland... thank you," she choked out, covering her mouth to muffle a sob.
"Focus on being there for our daughter. I'm flying back as soon as I can."
"Okay... okay."
"Don't cry."
"Leland, I miss you so much right now."
Before she had even hung up, Dr. Lewis had turned around and was waiting for her. When she looked at him this time, his face was practically split in two by a bright, groveling smile.
"You're a doctor too? I had no idea!"
Winifred's lips barely moved. "I'm entrusting my daughter's surgery to you."
"Of course, of course! I just got a call from the higher-ups. I only just realized your partner is from the Kingsbridge Lockwoods! Ah, what a massive misunderstanding! My deepest apologies!"
A nurse quickly escorted Winifred to change into scrubs and complete the pre-op sanitization. She stayed by Annelise's side through the entire procedure.
Dr. Lewis performed the surgery flawlessly.
