To this day, Holden still blamed her for showing no remorse. He accused her of hurting Iris. Holden Lockwood, usually so brilliant and calculating, was completely blind when it came to this issue. That was the power of bias. In his eyes, Iris Morgan was flawless; she could do no wrong. If anyone clashed with Iris, it was inherently their fault. There was no point in cursing Holden out right now, and defending herself wouldn't solve anything either. The root of the conflict wasn't about right or wrong. It was about Holden stepping up for his favored girl. Winifred Shultz said nothing more and walked away.
The restroom exit faced a corner of the garden. She walked down the corridor. Bad luck. Kian Jennings and Preston York were there. The two men stood smoking at the exit, apparently waiting for Holden's family. It was the only way out. She had to brace herself and walk past them.
"Did seeing Holden yesterday finally force your true colors out today?" Preston mocked, his eyes narrowed as smoke drifted from his lips. He clearly interpreted Winifred's public tears as "losing her mind out of jealousy because Holden loves Iris."
Winifred stuck to the edge of the path, trying to keep as far away from the two lapdogs as possible. But Preston didn't let it go. He laughed brazenly. "What did I say yesterday? You faked your death and played the long game to hook Holden. You denied it, but today you proved me right."
Kian joined the ridicule. "Yesterday you paraded around in front of me, claiming you'd never have anything to do with Holden again. So what were you crying about today?"
Preston chimed in, "She's just faking it. Saying she doesn't want to see him while secretly scheming to create chances to get back together."
Unable to stand the vile remarks, Winifred glared at them. "Shut up! You two gossip more than a bunch of old hens!"
"Yes, ma'am."
The nanny walked away, and Winifred took her place, standing by to assist. Sitting in her wheelchair, Nelly muttered to herself. "My heart just aches for Iris! Such a beautiful girl, and with such a sweet temper. She's polite, she knows how to treat people, and she's so respectful to her elders. Every time she visits, she brings me the finest things all those big celebrities use."
Another nanny flattered her, "That's right. Ms. Morgan cares about you more than a biological daughter would."
