Seth puffed out his little chest.
"Why should I apologize to her?"
Holden's tone left no room for argument. "Because you hit my girl."
As he spoke, he hoisted Jordyn a little higher, tucking her head against his chest in a protective gesture.
Seth took it all in.
Was the man trying to rub it in that Seth didn't have a dad here to protect him? Was he trying to provoke him with a display of fatherly love?
How pathetic!
Even without a dad, he had himself.
If he couldn't rely on a father, he'd rely on his own strength.
Seth clenched his tiny fists tighter. "Then tell me, why did I hit her?"
"..."
Holden went silent.
Obviously, he wasn't going to admit that Jordyn had pulled Annelise's hair first.
Adults were smart; they rarely dug their own graves.
Jordyn lifted her head from Holden's chest, pouting.
"I just gently touched Annelise's hair! And then you hit me!"
Seth didn't miss a beat. "Did you teach her to say that, Holden?"
"Watch your mouth!"
"When she pulled my sister's hair, we were all eating lunch. The teachers and all the kids saw it. She goes home for the weekend and suddenly changes her story. If no one taught her to lie, how did she figure it out?"
Holden's brow furrowed deeply.
He clearly hadn't expected to be cornered by a toddler.
His face darkened as he held back his temper. "I'm the same age as your father. Do not call me by my first name."
"Holden, I made it clear from the start that I am the one negotiating with you. I am acting as the representative for my nanny, Jayce. Please respect my temporary position. It's common courtesy."
Did she want to be childless?
He had hit a massive nerve, and her carefully powdered face went livid.
Jordyn, feeling even more wronged, buried her face in Holden's shoulder and whined, "Uncle Holden, do you see?! Seth is so mean! He even bullies Aunt Iris. Imagine how hard he hit me!"
This whole conflict had started over who got to play Snow White.
Having lost his footing against Seth, Holden turned his attention to the other child involved.
Annelise was still being firmly held back by the director. She caught Holden glaring at her. She pressed her little lips together, trying desperately not to cry. Her eyes brimmed with tears, and her tiny shoulders shook.
She wanted her daddy. If her daddy were here, he would scoop her up and hold her tight, protecting her just like Jordyn was being protected. Then Holden wouldn't dare glare at her.
Holden looked so scary. He was so tall, his head almost touching the ceiling. Even Ms. Miller and the director were terrified of him, hiding by the wall while holding her in place, almost as if serving her up for him to hit.
And Jayce was completely useless, standing by the wall laughing and crying like a fool after being intimidated by that Iris lady.
Thank goodness her brother was here. He had come to save her. She had someone to rely on!
She stretched out her little arms, calling out across the room, "Seth, I'm scared!"
