Annelise was so excited about seeing the show.
She had been napping for half an hour, but her eyelashes were still fluttering.
Winifred leaned over and patted her.
"Calm down. You need to sleep well to have the energy to have fun tonight."
"I am asleep, Mommy. Don't worry," Annelise said, rolling over with her back to Winifred.
As a result, she fell asleep late and woke up late. It was almost six o'clock by the time she got up.
Winifred and Celeste each held a child's hand and carried a large diaper bag, with a SpongeBob water bottle hanging around their necks.
They checked out of their resort hotel room and marched out to hail a cab.
It was rush hour, and the traffic looked like an endless serpent.
The resort area was packed with tourists, and there weren't nearly enough ride-sharing cars.
Celeste suggested, "Why not call Quentin? It'd be easier to take our own car."
Winifred replied, "He has a college reunion tonight. He doesn't have time to pick us up."
"Just try. What if he's hanging out nearby?"
Winifred looked at the two kids.
Annelise had just woken up, her cheeks flushed pink.
The wind blew her soft curly hair, and the peach fuzz on her smooth forehead was still damp with sweat.
Seth was frowning, probably worried that if they arrived too late, the tickets would be sold out, leading to disappointment.
Boys had strong pride. After suffering consecutive blows, his little heart couldn't take much more.
Winifred didn't hesitate anymore and dialed Quentin's number.
[Quentin, where are you?]
Quentin: [At the Chamberlain's. Is something wrong?]
Winifred knew that restaurant.
Earlier in the year, for Eleanor's birthday, Quentin had taken the whole family there.
The restaurant was on the south side of the city, and she was on the west side. They were over twenty miles apart.
She had to let it go.
[Nothing. Go ahead with your classmates. I'll hang up now.]
It was as if he and that home-wrecker Iris would die of an itch if they didn't ruin Winifred's day.
They even followed them here.
Celeste nudged Winifred with her elbow. "Your ex-husband is here."
"What?"
Winifred instinctively reached out and scooped up both kids, turning them around in one swift motion.
She pressed their faces against her legs to hide them.
Following Celeste's pointing finger toward the parking area, she saw a bright red supercar wedged between black sedans. It looked like a wild rose blooming in a swamp, radiating obnoxiousness from miles away. Iris's favorite.
Annelise clung to Winifred's leg, standing on her tiptoes, and tilted her little head up high to ask:
"Mommy, do you not have enough money to buy tickets?"
Playing here was very expensive. She had always remembered that.
She was happily singing and dancing, waiting to go in, and was suddenly pulled back by her mom.
Obviously, her mom didn't want to take her in anymore.
Seth also looked up at her. "I'm paying tonight. Don't worry about the money. Just cover it for now, and I'll break my piggy bank and pay you back when we get home."
