Celeste had been gone for quite a while.
Seth offered to go check.
"Mommy, I'll go check on Celeste."
Boys loved adventure. Having the courage to explore was a good thing.
Usually, as long as it passed a safety check, Winifred supported his independence.
She pulled a tissue, wiped Seth's little mouth, and instructed softly,
"You can only move within Mommy's line of sight. Don't go far."
"Okay."
Seth puffed out his little chest. He was very obedient, stopping right by the edge of the empty first-tier area closest to his mom, his little head swiveling to look for Celeste.
While he was intensely searching, he suddenly heard Larissa's voice.
It came from right behind him. He turned his head.
By the edge of the flowing fishpond behind him, Larissa was on her phone. With her back to him, facing the water, she held a deluxe, massive ice cream cone.
It was the exact ice cream he wanted. When his mom had let him order earlier, he had checked the price. One ice cream was 299.
He swallowed hard. Skipping the dessert, he had ordered a plate of lobster thermidor instead. For the same price, the ice cream was only enough for him. But the meat could be shared with the whole family, which was more practical.
Larissa seemed anxious, yapping into her phone, “Aunt Winifred, you're not home tonight either?”
The conversation was about his mom, so Seth had to listen. He stretched his short little legs, climbed onto a dining chair, sat down, and made himself as small as possible.
Larissa said, “My uncle is always out at networking dinners, and he doesn't get enough sleep, so his skin is dry. I feel so bad for him. Could you please make a batch of Botanical Beauty Cream? I want to give it to him.”
His mom must have refused.
Larissa's tone turned cold. “You're unemployed and can't find a job. You're just sitting at home all day. How can you say you don't have time?”
Shelly had already told them: Winifred had offended the Goddess Iris. The Goddess's fiancé was going to buy the entire Auburn Avenue, and their uncle's clinic almost had to shut down.
It was the Goddess's kind heart that didn't want to hurt their uncle, only demanding that Winifred be fired.
Shelly also said: The Goddess's fiancé pulled strings with the medical board, and Winifred had been blacklisted from the medical system permanently.
Winifred was nothing now. Refusing to make skincare products for Shelly was a huge mistake. She would regret it!
Demi muttered, "When Winifred regrets it and wants to make peace with us, are you going to forgive her?"
"Forgive her, my foot! Do you know how free and happy we've been these past few days without her here?"
This weekend had been an incredibly glorious vacation.
Finish homework, throw it in the backpack.
Turn it in on Monday, and let the homeroom teacher deal with whether it was right or wrong.
